In
a game where the Cerritos College men’s soccer team knew
that a victory was the only result that could keep them
in contention for a chance at the South Coast Conference
championship, the Falcons finally got the goal they
needed and defeated Los Angeles Harbor College, 1-0 at
home on Friday. With the win, Cerritos, ranked #5 in the
nation and #2 in Southern California, improved to 12-3-4
overall and 6-1-2 in the SCC. The 20 points keeps them
within five points of top-ranked and conference leading
Mt. San Antonio College with five games remaining. On
Tuesday, the team will travel to Pasadena City College
for a 1:00 p.m. game and then host Compton College on
Wednesday in a make-up game.
For the outset
of the contest, the Falcons put pressure on the Seahawks
and registered seven straight shots on goal. On two
occasions, LA Harbor goalkeeper Logan Adams came up with
critical saves to keep his team in the game. The teams
went into halftime scoreless and it looked like the
Seahawks were playing for the draw. But with less than
20 minutes remaining, Cerritos goalkeeper
Diego Millan
(Paramount HS) cleared the ball to freshman
Gerardo Torres
(Norte Vista HS) along the far sideline. Torres
then fed the ball to sophomore
Andy Rico
(Lynwood HS) as he broke toward the goal. As he
got to the top of the box, he sent a pass to a streaking
Michael Paz
(California HS), who scored past Adams.
The game wasn’t
locked because the Seahawks came back two minutes later
on a direct kick by Alexis Lopez that Millan made a
diving same on. The Falcons took advantage of LA Harbor
pushing all of their players forward and had a couple of
chances to score, but both Rico and Torres each missed a
chance. In the final minutes of the game, Millan came up
with his most important save on the day, as he
stonewalled Edger Flores from in front of the net.
Millan made eight saves to secure his first shutout of
the season, while he shared on another one. |
