After
trailing 1-0 at halftime against Pasadena City College
on Tuesday, the Cerritos College men’s soccer team
scored three second half goals to post the South Coast
Conference win. With the victory, the Falcons are now
13-3-4 overall and 7-1-2 in conference play. The team
will now complete their suspended game against Compton
College on Wednesday at 3:00 p.m. The game was
originally slated to be played October 23, but was
postponed due to the poor air quality from the fires.
Just a minute
into the second half, freshman
Michael Paz
(California HS) was able to break away from the
Lancer defender and threaded a nice pass to sophomore
Andy Rico
(Lynwood HS), who put the ball away for the tying
goal. In the first half, Paz went in alone, but was
turned away. Not more than two minutes later, Paz was on
the receiving end of a pass from freshman
Alex Munoz
(Corona Centennial HS) and he made a clever move
to get around the goalkeeper and scored the eventual
game-winning goal. The Falcons picked up an insurance
goal in the 80th minute when sophomore
Brian Alvarez
(Salesian HS) sent off a nice pass of his own to
freshman
Gerardo Torrez (Norte Vista HS), and he
put the game out of reach.
“Our guys did
a great job of putting the offensive pressure on in the
second half,” said Falcon head coach
Benny Artiaga.
“And it’s also a credit to our defense, who played well
despite the small field space.”
The Lancers
scored their goal late in the first half on a
controversial play. It appeared to the Cerritos players
and staff that three Pasadena City players were offside,
but when the call was not made, it forced sophomore
goalkeeper
Ivan Mercado
(Paramount HS) to come far out of his net. There
was a collision on the play, but the ball was knocked
into the net for the game’s first goal. Mercado
eventually came out of the game after 55 minutes of
action, with freshman
Diego Millan
(Paramount HS) playing the rest of the way.
“After we took
the lead, we were able to adjust our tempo and we got
some great play from sophomore midfielder
Missael Macedo
(South Gate HS) and freshman sweeper
Jonathan Rivas
(Santa Fe HS). It was a very good win for us.” |
