Freshman
forward
Michael Paz (California HS) scored twice
and assisted on two others to lead the Cerritos College
men’s soccer team to a 4-1 South Coast Conference
victory over Compton College on Wednesday. The game was
a make-up from October 23 due to the poor air quality
from the Southern California fires. With the win, the
Falcons, who are ranked #2 in the state and Southern
California, and #5 in the nation, are 14-3-4 on the year
and 8-1-2 in SCC play. As for the Tartars, they dropped
to 1-11-5 overall and 1-6-3 in conference play. Next up
for Cerritos will be a 2:00 p.m. game at El Camino
College.
The Falcons
jumped on the board early, as freshman midfielder
Alex Munoz
(Corona Centennial HS) received a pass inside the
box from Paz, and he drilled a shot past Compton
goalkeeper Anthony Plascencia. Although Cerritos was
controlling the tempo of the game, the Tartars were able
to get the ball deep and tie the game in the 21st
minute on a scramble deep in Falcon territory. However,
just two minutes later, Cerritos would regain the lead,
as Paz scored after getting a nice pass from freshman
midfielder Julio Morales (Norwalk HS) that
put him alone with Plascencia, and Paz scored.
Before the end
of the first half, Paz found himself in position to
score again and he was able to chip the ball over the
goalkeeper. Freshman
Ramon Corona
Torres (South Gate HS) was credited with
the assist after he led Paz into the box with a nice
pass.
Although neither
team put up much of an offensive threat in the second
half, Munoz was able to score his second goal of the
game on a header. Morales started the play at midfield
and sent the ball to Paz, who dribbled down the
sideline. After making a move toward the goal, he sent a
pass along the goal line to Munoz, who scored his sixth
goal of the season.
Freshman
goalkeeper
Diego Millan (Paramount HS) played the
first half and made four saves, while freshman
Michael Mendez
(Downey HS) came on in the second half and turned
away three shots. |
