The Cerritos College men’s soccer team suffered
their second consecutive loss on Saturday, as
they dropped a 2-1 decision to Mission College.
With the setback, the Falcons fell to 4-2-1 and
will look to snap their losing streak on Tuesday
when they host College of the Sequoias at 2:00
p.m.
“This is a true gut-check
point of the season for the guys,” said head
coach
Benny
Artiaga. “I can’t really fault the way
we played because we played good team defense
and our back line was phenomenal. I feel bad for
our defense, who kept us in the game long enough
to win, but we just couldn’t finish on offense.”
On the day, the Falcons
outshot Mission, 16-4, with eight of those
chances being clear scoring opportunities that
were not finished.
The team fell behind 1-0 just
four minutes into the game off a corner kick,
but for the next 80 minutes, anyone would think
the Falcons had been in control the whole game.
After several attacks on the goal and added
pressure on the Mission defense, Cerritos tied
the game in the 28th minute.
Sophomore
Andy
Rico (Lynwood HS) gained
possession of the ball deep in Mission territory
and held the ball just the right amount of time
before sending a pass to sophomore
Hector Quezada (Gahr HS), who
controlled the ball of his chest and dribbled
past the last defender before scoring.
Mission picked up the
game-winner in the 85th minute as
Cerritos had pushed everyone up for a shot at a
goal of their own. They were caught short-handed
and allowed a goal.
