After a pair of sluggish performances, the
Cerritos College men’s soccer team responded
with a dominating performance in their 9-0
non-conference home win against College of the
Sequoias (0-3) on Tuesday. The Falcons (5-2-1)
had dropped their last two games, but received
very little response from the Giants, who were
unable to generate any kind of offensive attack.
Cerritos will look to build on that performance
when they host Orange Coast College on Friday at
3:00 p.m. in another non-conference game.
It was a quick 2-0
lead just nine minutes into the game, as the
Falcons scored in bunches in the beginning and
end of both halves. Freshman
Gerardo Torres (Norte Vista HS)
got the scoring started, as he scored on a nice
pass from freshman
Alex
Munoz (Corona Centennial HS) in
the fifth minute. As it turned out, Torres also
scored the ninth goal of the game in the 86th
minute on a turn-and-kick goal off a pass from
freshman
Michael Vargas (Artesia HS).
Freshman
Ramon
Corona (South Gate HS) was very
aggressive on offense and pushed the ball into
Giant territory every time he touched the ball.
It finally paid off for sophomore
Brian
Alvarez (Salesian HS), who scored
off a nice feed from Munoz for a 3-0 lead in the
27th minute. The first half ended
when sophomore
Andy
Rico (Lynwood HS) was tackled in
the box in the final seconds, with sophomore
Billy Gutierrez (Huntington Park HS)
converting the penalty kick for a goal.
The second half started the
same as the first, with the Falcons scoring
twice in the first four minutes to take a 6-0
lead. Freshman
Norm
Mariscal (Corona Centennial HS)
accounted for both of the goals, with the second
coming on an assist from Rico. The game started
to get a little rough, with College of the
Sequoias receiving two red cards and played the
rest of the second half with only nine players.
Cerritos was able to move the ball around at
will, which allowed Rico, Alvarez and Gerardo
Torres to record the final three goals.
Freshman goalkeeper
Diego
Millan (Paramount HS) played the
first 50 minutes of the game and made three
saves, before coming out in favor of freshman
Michael
Mendez (Downey HS), who also
recorded three saves.
