After a sluggish first half on Friday against Compton
College, in which the Cerritos College men’s soccer team
seemed complacent, the team turned things around and
posted a 3-1 South Coast Conference victory. With the
win, the Falcons are now 7-2-3 overall and 1-0-1 in
conference play. Cerritos will now play their fourth
road game in a row when they travel to Los Angeles
Harbor College for a 6:00 p.m. game on Tuesday.
With a newfound
energy to start the second half, the Falcons opened up
the scoring in the eighth minute when sophomore
Missael Macedo
(South Gate HS) flicked the ball backwards deep
in Tartar territory to an open
Michael Paz
(California HS), and the freshman made two great
moves towards the center of the goal. He then finished
the play with a great cut on the goalkeeper and smoothly
put the ball away with a left-footed shot. It took the
team just 10 more minutes to double their lead and
Macedo was the catalyst once again. After his nice feed
pass to sophomore
Bryan Mejia
(Montebello HS) allowed him to break into open
territory, Mejia then aggressively went at the Compton
defender and made two hard cuts to try and shake him.
But before the defender could get back into position,
Mejia sent off a hard shot that got past the keeper and
gave the Falcons a 2-0 lead.
Compton did cut
the lead in half late in the game, but Cerritos stormed
right back and finished the game off with a goal in the
88th minute from sophomore
Jesus Ochoa
(Paramount HS) on a set piece. Ochoa played a
very strong game for the Falcons, as did sophomore
defender
Luis Segovia (California HS) and freshman
defender
Jonathan Rivas (Santa Fe HS). Freshman
forward
Norm Mariscal (Corona Centennial HS) came
on in the second half and put a lot of pressure on the
Compton defense, as did Paz, while sophomore midfielder
Ivan Perez
(Chaparral (NV) HS) continued to control the
midfield and dictate the pace of the game. |
