After
finishing the season 18-4-4 and earning the #2 seed in
the Southern California Regional Playoffs, the Cerritos
College men’s soccer team concluded the 2007 season
ranked #6 in the country by the National Soccer Coaches
Association of America NSCAA/adidas poll. The team was
just one win away from advancing to the state tournament
in an attempt to defend their state title from the 2006
season.
Along with the
team’s national recognition, the Falcons had eight
players earn All-South Coast Conference honors. Selected
to the 1st Team were sophomores
Ivan
Perez (Chaparral, NV HS) and
Bryan
Mejia (Montebello HS), along with
freshmen
Jonathan Rivas (Santa Fe HS) and
Michael
Paz (California HS). Earning 2nd
Team recognition were sophomore
Brian
Alvarez (Salesian HS) and freshmen
Alex
Munoz (Corona Centennial HS) and
Miguel
Vargas (Artesia HS). Sophomore midfielder
Leo
Munoz (Downey HS) was also named to the
Honorable Mention list.

midfield position. As for Mejia, he scored two goals and
added four assists, as he used his speed on the outside
to help create a lot of the team’s scoring chances on
the season. As a freshman defender, Rivas was one of the
team’s captains and was assigned to shut down the
opposing team’s best offensive players, while Paz was
the team’s leading scorer with 14 goals and nine
assists. He was also selected as the school’s first 1st
Team Division III All-American in school history.
Alvarez was
named to the 2nd Team for the second year in
a row and accounted for three goals and eight assists as
a midfielder/forward, with Munoz stepping in as a
freshman and making an immediate impact. He used his
physical talents to pound opposing players and
contributed six goals and nine assists on the year.
Vargas was another solid defender who provided some
offensive skill, scoring one goal and assisting on two
others. As for Munoz, he was a very aggressive player
who also used his offensive skills to assist on five
goals this season. |
