The Cerritos
College men's soccer team scored two first half
goals and used a tight defense in the second
half to post a 2-0 South Coast Conference
shutout victory over Pasadena City College on
Friday afternoon. With the win, the Falcons
moved into a first place tie with the Lancers
with 25 points (8-3-1), while the Lancers are
also 8-3-1. Cerritos (16-4-1 overall) will have
their second of three tests next Tuesday when
they travel to Mt. San Antonio College for a
6:00 p.m. game. Entering action on Friday, the
Mounties were in third place with 23 points,
while Long Beach City College was in fourth
place with 20 points. Cerritos closes out their
regular season at home next Friday against the
Vikings.
In the win
over the Lancers, the Falcons got on the board
in the seventh minute when freshman forward
Luis
Gonzalez (Long Beach Millikan
HS) scored on a penalty kick. The play was
set up after sophomore forward
Michael
Paz (California HS) was
pulled down in the box. Gonzalez scored his
team-leading 15th goal against Lancer goalkeeper
Jorge Sainz, who kept his team in the game with
some outstanding saves.
Cerritos
appeared poised to go up 2-0 in the 29th minute,
but Sainz made a diving save on sophomore
midfielder
Rickey
Reyes (Hawthorne HS/Pasadena
City College) after receiving a crossing
pass from freshman
Stephan
Mongu (Hamilton HS). Sainz
also stopped Reyes on a point-blank shot in the
64th minute.
Right before
halftime, the Falcons got their 2-0 advantage,
as sophomore forward
Norm
Mariscal (Corona Centennial HS)
collected a muffed clearing kick from Sainz. He
then sent a pass to freshman midfielder
Andrew
Robles (St. John Bosco HS),
who scored into the lower left corner of the
net.
Sophomore
goalkeeper Diego
Millan (Paramount HS)
posted his sixth shutout by making seven
saves, including several with hands in his face.
He beat Jose Cortez twice on the day, while also
relying on his talented defense, anchored by
Jonathan Rivas (Santa Fe HS)
and
Fabian
Perez (Bellflower HS).
