On the
strength of their convincing 4-0 win at home
against Long Beach City College on Friday
afternoon and Pasadena City College losing 2-0
to Los Angeles Harbor College, the Cerritos
College men's soccer team locked up sole
possession of first place in the South Coast
Conference championship. The Falcons, who came
in second place the last two years, finished the
regular season with a 10-3-1 record in the SCC
for 31 points, while Pasadena City College
dropped to third place with the loss and Mt.
San Antonio College moving up into second
place. Cerritos is also 18-4-1 on the year and
will open the Southern California Regional
Playoffs at home next Saturday against an
opponent to be determined after the seeding
meeting on Tuesday.
The Falcons
held off an early offensive attack by the
Vikings, as sophomore goalkeeper
Diego
Millan (Paramount HS)
stopped a close-range shot by Manuel Bautista.
He also turned away Juan Guzman, whose header
was stopped by a diving Millan, who would go on
to make seven saves in the win.
It wasn't
until the 23rd minute that Cerritos got on the
board, as freshman
Stephan
Mongu (Hamilton HS) saw
his shot from just outside the box find freshman
Paul Montalvo (La Sierra HS),
who tipped the ball past Viking goalkeeper Chris
DeWalt.
Sensing the
conference championship with each minute ticking
away, the Falcons exploded for three more goals
in the second half, with sophomore
Jonathan Rivas (Santa Fe HS)
scoring on a rebound in the 59th minute. The
play was set up on a corner kick from sophomore
Alex
Munoz (Corona Centennial HS),
whose shot was deflected by Montalvo, looking
for his second goal. But Viking Osvaldo
Sepulveda deflected the attempt by Montalvo,
with Rivas right there to put the rebound into
the net.
It was a 3-0
game in the 69th minute after DeWalt was unable
to handle the original shot by Mongo, with
freshman
Timmy Seo
(Los Alamitos HS) there to chip in the
mishandled ball. The final goal came in the 76th
minute when Munoz drilled home a hard shot that
went over the outstretched hands of DeWalt and
just under the crossbar. The offense wasn't
done, as they had two other shots hit the post.
