Quite possibly
looking ahead to their much-anticipated game against
rival Mt. San Antonio College on Friday at 4:00
p.m., the Cerritos College men's soccer team was
defeated on Tuesday, 3-1 by Pasadena City College.
The Falcons, ranked #2 in the country, are the
second highly-ranked team the Lancers have beaten.
Earlier in the season, PCC posted a win over
top-ranked Mt. SAC, while the loss also snapped the
team's nine-game unbeaten streak.
Cerritos (11-2-1
overall) dropped to second place in the South Coast
Conference at 3-1-1, while Pasadena City moved to
the top of the heap with a 4-1-0 record.
The Falcons
outshot the Lancers, 21-12, but were stoned several
times from point-blank range by Lancer goalkeeper
Jorge Sainz, who made 13 saves. PCC took an early
lead, as James Hernandez sent a pass off a corner
kick to Ando Ghevandyan, who kicked in a goal on the
short side to beat stunned goalie
Diego
Millan (Paramount HS). In the
30th minute, Lancer defender Malcolm Linton, sent a
perfectly-placed free kick from the 40-yard line to
Jose Cortez, who headed the shot into the far upper
corner of the net, gave PCC a 2-0 lead.
Despite the
deficit, Cerritos went on to outshoot Pasadena City,
14-4 in the half and got on the board right before
halftime. Sophomore forward
Norm
Mariscal (Corona Centennial HS)
scored in a header in the 43rd minute on a throw-in
by sophomore defender
Michael
Vargas (Artesia HS).
The Lancers
capitalized on their opportunities and scored an
insurance goal in the second half. Hernandez scored
his second goal of the game in the 59th minute,
while the PCC defense stopped the Falcons each time
they turned up the heat offensively. Looking to get
within striking distance, freshman
Stephan
Mongu (Hamilton HS) was in on
a breakaway, only to have the ball knocked away
before he could get off a shot. Earlier in the game,
Sainz stoned freshman Luis Gonzalez
(Long Beach Millikan HS) with a two-handed
catch and turned away sophomore
Michael Paz
(California HS) in the 73rd minute off a
hard blast.
