After taking a 2-0
lead early in the second half against Compton
College in a South Coast Conference game on Friday
afternoon, the Cerritos College men's soccer team
found themselves deadlocked at 2-2. But sophomore
midfielder
Alex Munoz
(Corona Centennial HS) scored the
game-winning goal in the 84th minute to secure the
win for the Falcons. With the win, the team improved
to 13-3-1 overall and 5-2-1 in SCC play, while the
Tartars fell to 6-8-4 overall and 2-5-1 in the SCC.
Cerritos will now host East Los Angeles at 4:00 p.m.
on Tuesday.
The game started
with a sterling play by freshman forward
Luis
Gonzalez (Long Beach Millikan HS),
who passed the ball to himself before drilling the
ball into the far post for a goal in the 14th
minute. The play started with freshman midfielder
Timmy
Seo (Los Alamitos HS)
splitting the defense and then flicking the ball
with a beautiful touch to Gonzalez, who did the rest
for the goal.
Maintaining their
offensive pressure through the first half, it paid
off again in the first minute of the second half,
with freshman midfielder
Andrew
Robles (St. John Bosco HS)
getting credit for his second goal of the season.
After Munoz made a strong diagonal run across the
field, he fed the ball to Robles, who took on two
defenders and found some room in the far post for a
goal and a 2-0 advantage.
Compton had some
success against a depleted Falcon team, who was
playing without several of their starters. They were
able to score twice against sophomore goalkeeper
Diego
Millan (Paramount HS), who
eventually shored up his game and did not allow
another ball past him, making six saves on the day.
As the game
started to wind down, that's when Gonzalez and Munoz
teamed up for the eventual game-winning goal.
Gonzalez, drawing a lot of attention, was able to
find Munoz, who drilled his seventh goal into the
upper right corner, which turned out to be the
winner.
