On the strength of
their 4-0 South Coast Conference home win over East
Los Angeles College on Tuesday, and Pasadena City
College posting a 1-0 win over Long Beach City
College, the Cerritos College men's soccer team has
moved into second place in the South Coast
Conference. The Falcons, who are now 6-2-1 in the
SCC (14-3-1 overall) have 19 points and are tied
with Mt. San Antonio College, while Pasadena
City leads with 21 points and a 7-2-0 mark. Long
Beach City, who entered the day with 17 points,
drops to third and is 5-2-2 in conference play.
Cerritos will now travel to fifth place Los Angeles
Harbor College for a 6:00 p.m. game on Friday.
In the win over
East LA, the Falcons were scoreless at intermission,
but had numerous scoring chances in the first half.
Both freshman
Timmy Seo
(Los Alamitos HS) and sophomore
Gerardo
Macias (Artesia HS) were
turned away on point blank shots by Huskie
goalkeeper Sergio Molina, while sophomore
Rickey
Reyes (Hawthorne HS/Pasadena City
College) hit the goalpost in the 44th minute.
Cerritos finally
got one into the net after sophomore All-American
Michael Paz (California HS)
was taken down in the box by Molina, which resulted
in a penalty kick. Freshman
Luis
Gonzalez (Long Beach Millikan HS)
scored into the lower left corner in the 49th minute
to break the scoreless tie. That seemed to relax the
Falcon offense, who continued to turn up the heat.
They did receive a
break after a Huskie defender knocked the ball into
his own goal in the 68th minute after trying to
clear a Paz shot. Paz and Gonzalez were involved in
the team's third goal, as freshman
Gerardo
Torres (Norte Vista HS) turned
and scored from inside the box in the 73rd minute.
The Falcons finished off the scoring in the 81st
minute when sophomore
Alex Munoz
(Corona Centennial HS) scored on a low,
hard shot that went under the arm of replacement
goalkeeper Abel Carrera after a pass from Torres.
Falcon freshman
goalkeeper
Pedro
Velasquez (Colegio-Metropolitano,
Guatemala) made six saves in posting his sixth
win of the year and recorded his third shutout.
