As the defending
state champions, the Cerritos College men's soccer
team knows that their opponents are looking to find
out just how good their teams are when they face the
Falcons. Cerritos showed that they are still loaded
with talent when they defeated Oxnard College, 6-1
on Friday and then defeated Taft College, 4-1 on
Sunday with at the Mt. San Antonio Tournament. The
Falcons (2-0-0) will now travel north for the
Hartnell Tournament and open with a 3:00 p.m. game
on Friday against American River College.
It only took four
minutes into the season to jump on the scoreboard,
as sophomore
Andrew
Robles (St. John Bosco HS)
took advantage of the Condors goalkeeper attempted
clearing pass that went awry. Robles was there to
take the ball and chip the ball into the net from 45
yards out. Then, in the 20th minute, freshman
Cesar Castillo (Eagle Valley
(CO) HS) was the recipient of a solid 50-yard
run and pass by sophomore
Timmy Seo
(Los Alamitos HS). After Seo fed the ball
to sophomore
Luis
Gonzalez (Long Beach Millikan HS),
he quickly passed to Castillo, who turned and shot
with the outside of his foot into the upper corner
of the goal.
Before halftime,
the Falcons made it a 3-0 game when Gonzalez took on
a player and laid the ball off to sophomore
Benjamin
Nieves (Bellflower HS), who
fired a shot into the far post with his left foot.
It only took the team five minutes into the second
half to see Gonzalez drill a goal from 30 yards out
with Seo earning the assist. After the Condors
received a penalty kick to ruin the shout attempt by
freshman
Daniel
Lizama (Duarte HS), Gonzalez
competed the hat trick in the 88th minute when he
received a pass from Robles.
In the
championship game, the Falcons jumped on a talented
Taft team from the outset and scored seven minutes
into the game. Once again it was Gonzalez getting
Cerritos on the board, scoring his fourth goal of
the short season from just outside the top of the
box on a pass from freshman
German
Rivas (Monrovia HS). The game
went back and forth for the rest of the first half,
until the Falcons blew out the Cougars by scoring
the next three goals.
Castillo accounted
for two of the goals, while Rivas also scored once.
In the 58th minute, Gonzalez took on two players and
fed to Castillo in the penalty spot for an easy chip
shot into the net. Just five minutes later,
sophomore
Fabian
Perez (Bellflower HS) took on
a pair of Taft players and then filtered a ball
through to Rivas, who made one move and shot a
strike into the upper corner. Castillo finished off
the Cerritos scoring with an assist from sophomore
Juan Mejia (Paramount HS).
Seeing his first collegiate action in goal, freshman
Anthony Iniquez (Animo HS)
posted a win.
