Looking to make a
statement after their loss to Mt. San Antonio
College on Tuesday, the Cerritos College men's
soccer team scored virtually at will, as they posted
an 8-0 South Coast Conference home win over Pasadena
City College on Friday afternoon. The margin of
victory by the Falcons (7-1-1, 1-1-0) was their
second-highest, as they posted a 9-0 win over Orange
Coast College earlier in the year. The team will now
host ECC Compton Center at 2:00 p.m. on Tuesday.
"We felt we needed
to be aggressive from the beginning of the game and
look to regain our swagger," said head coach
Benny
Artiaga. "We had an itch we needed to
scratch after that loss and it just happened to be
Pasadena that was next on our schedule."
The outcome of the
game was much different than their last meeting, a
5-2 Cerritos win in the third round of the regional
playoffs last year that sent the Falcons to the
state tournament.
Cerritos got the
scoring started by the player who draws more
attention than any other player, sophomore
Luis
Gonzalez (Long Beach Millikan HS).
After spinning around a pair of Lancer defenders,
Gonzalez sent such a hard shot that it deflected off
Pasadena City goalkeeper Iran Rodriguez and into the
net for a goal.
Gonzalez, who
scored four goals and added an assist on the day,
received great praise from Artiaga. "When you have a
guy (Gonzalez) of that caliber, he's going to set
the tone from the beginning of the game and the rest
of the team is going to follow."
It happened all
day, as the Falcons peppered shot after shot onto
Rodriguez, who faced 30 shots on goal and made eight
saves in the game. The pressure continued when
Gonzalez was pulled down in the box and calmly
drained a penalty kick in the 27th minute. He
completed the natural hat trick five minutes later
when sophomore
Andrew
Robles (St. John Bosco HS)
lifted a ball over to Gonzalez, who worked past two
more defenders and lifted the ball over Rodriguez,
who came out of the net to try and cut down the
play.
Prior to halftime,
Cerritos scored again, with freshman
German Rivas (Monrovia
HS) earning an assist on a beautiful move
by sophomore
Juan Mejia
(Paramount HS). After coming out of the
net, Mejia put a move that left Rodriguez on the
ground with an open net behind him.
By the end of the
game, Gonzalez scored his fourth goal of the game to
give him 13 on the year, while freshman
Alexis Burguete (Bell HS),
Robles and sophomore
Danny
Macias (Cypress HS) all
scoring. Freshman goalkeeper
Danny Lizama (Duarte HS)
earned the shutout win by making two saves.
