The Cerritos
College men's soccer team posted a 3-1 South Coast
Conference home win over Los Angeles Harbor College
to knock the Seahawks out of the undefeated
conference ranks. With the win, the Falcons improved
to 10-1-1 overall and 4-1-0 in conference play,
while LA Harbor fell to 8-2-1 overall and 3-1-0
in SCC play. Cerritos will now travel to El Camino
College on Friday for a 2:00 p.m. conference game.
The first half was
evenly played, as both teams had their fair share of
goal-scoring opportunities. Additionally, both teams
displayed a very quick pace and used their defense
to thwart several other chances. Early in the game,
Seahawks goalkeeper Alex Diaz came up with a big
save on sophomore
Salvador Melendrez (Long Beach
Millikan HS), who looked to get on the board
with a header.
Early in the
second half, sophomore All-American
Luis
Gonzalez (Long Beach Millikan HS)
worked his way into the box on a nice lead pass from
freshman
Cesar
Castillo (Eagle Valley, CO HS).
Gonzalez was pulled down in the box by Seahawk
defender Jose Mejia and was awarded a penalty kick.
He easily scored to give the Falcons a 1-0 lead.
LA Harbor did tie
the game in the 57th minute after a corner kick by
Ralph Delgado missed the net and was cleared to the
top of the box. The ball landed at the foot of Jesse
Calvillo, who shot was deflected and into the net
past Falcon freshman goalkeeper Jhovany
Hernandez (Huntington Beach HS).
The game was very
physical from the outset and the Falcons did not
back down at any time. In the 82nd minute, they
broke through the Seahawk defense for the eventual
game-winning goal. On the play, Castillo stole a
clearing pass and dribbled into the box to take a
shot on goal. Diaz made the save, but the ball went
to sophomore
Pedro
Chavez (Cabrillo HS), who fed
the ball to Castillo and scored into the lower
corner of the net.
Before the end of
the game, Gonzalez showed his flair for the
dramatic, as he worked the ball beautifully around Moises
Balderas and Alvaro Navarro to put himself right in
front of Diaz. Showing his right foot the whole
time, Gonzalez switched to his left and Diaz could
do nothing but watch the ball roll into the net.
Hernandez made
seven saves to earn the win, while Diaz (11 saves)
kept the Seahawks in the game with four point-blank
saves.
