It didn't take
long for the Cerritos College men's soccer team to
get started in their South Coast Conference match at
El Camino College on Friday afternoon. The Falcons
scored six times in the first half and cruised to a
9-1 victory that improved their season record to
11-1-1, while they are now 5-1-0 in conference play.
They will finish off the first round of conference
play on Tuesday when they travel to East Los Angeles
College for a 2:00 p.m. contest.
Getting the team
started was sophomore
Salvador Melendrez (Long Beach
Millikan HS), who scored twice and added an
assist. Also scoring a pair of goals was sophomore
Luis Gonzalez (Long Beach Millikan
HS) and freshman
Alexis Burguete (Bell HS),
while Gonzalez also added a pair of assists.
"Our outside
midfielders did a great job today. Chava Melendrez
and
German
Rivas (Monrovia HS) really
unbalanced their defense and Chava put away his
chances," said head coach
Benny
Artiaga. "Our defensive effort was
extremely good and in the first half we really took
control. We played a very unselfish game and did a
great job of moving ball around."
Joining in
the scoring were freshmen
Cesar
Castillo (Eagle Valley, CO HS),
Edgar Melendrez (Long Beach
Millikan HS) and
Miguel
Hernandez (Cabrillo HS), who
also chipped in with a pair of assists. Freshman
goalkeeper
Danny Lizama (Duarte HS)
posted his sixth win of the year and made three
saves.
