After the first 45
minutes of their South Coast Conference men's soccer
game, Cerritos College held just a 2-0 lead at
Pasadena City College. But the Falcons scored six
second-half goals, with four coming in a span of 16
minutes to register a convincing 8-0 victory. The
win improves the team's season record to 13-1-2,
while they are 7-1-1 in SCC play, while the Lancers
dropped to 0-15-1 overall and 0-8-1 in conference.
Cerritos will now travel to Compton on Friday for a
2:00 p.m. game against ECC Compton Center.
Cerritos opened
the scoring in the 35th minute after the state's
leading scorer, sophomore
Luis
Gonzalez (Long Beach Millikan HS)
scored his 22 goal of the season on a penalty kick.
On the play, freshman
Cesar
Castillo (Eagle Valley, CO HS)
took two Pasadena City players on and was brought
down in the box, which set up the penalty kick. Just
two minutes later, sophomore
Paul Montalvo (La Sierra HS)
scored his second goal of the year on a header off a
corner kick from freshman
Eddie
Valencia (Los Angeles Wilson HS).
"We played extremely well in the first half but we could not
finish," said head coach
Benny
Artiaga. "We told our guys that
they needed to be more focused in the final
third (of the game) because our midfield was
absolutely marvelous today."
After freshman
Ruben Gonzalez ( Artesia HS)
made it a 3-0 game with a goal in the 55th
minute and Gonzalez scored his second of the
game two minutes later, the Falcons saw all of
their hard work come to fruition. Starting in
the 70th minute on a goal by freshman
Christopher Rebolo ( St.
John Bosco HS), Cerritos scored four times
over the course of 16 minutes. Joining Rebolo in
the scoring barrage were sophomore
Fabian
Perez ( Bellflower HS),
Castillo and Gonzalez. In addition to his goal,
Castillo added three assists.
On the day, the Falcons put 30 shots on net, while freshman
goalkeeper
Anthony Iniquez ( Animo HS)
posted four saves to record his first shutout of
the season.
