Looking to ride
the momentum of a convincing win over Pasadena City
earlier in the week, the Cerritos College men's
soccer team was stunned by a 2-1 loss to ECC Compton
Center on Friday afternoon. The loss all but
eliminates the Falcons from defending their South
Coast Conference title with four games remaining.
The setback drops the team's record to 13-2-2
overall and 7-2-1 in conference play. They will look
to get back on the winning track when they host Long
Beach City at 1:00 p.m. on Tuesday.
"It was a very
difficult field to play on and we didn't make the
adjustments we needed to do to win" said head coach
Benny Artiaga. "It will serve us as a
wakeup call. But I'm quite confident the guys will
respond positively from this."
After a scoreless
first half, the Tartars took a 1-0 lead in the 60th
minute, but the Falcons tied the game 10 minutes
later. On a corner kick from freshman
Alexis Burguete (Bell HS),
sophomore
Luis
Gonzalez (Long Beach Millikan HS)
scored his state-leading 24th goal of the year.
However, ECC Compton Center countered with the
game-winning goal in the 80th minute.
