For the first
time in history, a member of the Cerritos
College men's soccer team has earned the
National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA)
Player of the Year. Falcon sophomore forward
Luis Gonzalez (Long Beach
Millikan HS), who led the Falcons to the
#2-national ranking, was named the National
Player of the Year after finishing with 27 goals
and 18 points for 72 points. He helped lead
Cerritos to the 3rd Round of the Southern
California Regional Playoffs his sophomore
season after guiding them to the state
championship as a freshman.
Gonzalez, who
finished his Cerritos career with 51 goals and
35 assists for 137 points, was also named the
California Community College Athletic
Association (CCCAA) October Male Athlete of the
Month, as well as the South Coast Conference
Player of the Year. He became the first
Cerritos male athlete to earn the monthly award,
while he joins a growing list of those that have
earned national recognition. In addition to
being a 2nd Team All-American as a freshman,
Gonzalez was joined last year by Jonathan
Rivas, who was a 1st
Team All-American selection, while
Michael Paz (2007), Marco Pulido
(2006) and Roberto Ramirez
(2004) are the other Falcons to earn
All-American recognition.
Along with his
national award, Gonzalez was also named 1st Team
All-West Regional All-American, while sophomore
Timmy Seo (Los Alamitos HS)
and sophomore Fabien Perez (Bellflower
HS) were both 2nd Team selections.
