10.28.11 - AGGRESSIVE ATTACK LEADS TO 5-0 WIN
|
Using an aggressive offensive attack, the Cerritos College men's soccer team was awarded a pair of penalty kicks, en route to a 5-0 South Coast Conference win against visiting El Camino College on Friday. The Falcons (15-1-1, 9-1-0) are currently ranked third in the country by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) for Division 111 (non-scholarship) schools. They will now host Long Beach City College at 1:00 p.m. on Tuesday in their final regular home game of the season. Cerritos finishes their regular season with three road contests. With the win over El Camino, coupled with the Mt. San Antonio tie with East Los Angeles, the falcons have taken over first place in the conference.
Only four minutes into the game, freshman Angel Ayala (Cabrillo HS) scored his first of three goals on the day, as he chipped a shot over Warrior (3-6-6, 2-5-3) goalkeeper Nolan Dean for his ninth goal of the year. On the play, freshman Gerardo Soto (Salesian HS) sent a ball toward the El Camino goal, where Ayala beat Nolan to the ball and after a quick move, scored into an open net. Later in the first half, Ayala was once again rushing toward a loose ball deep in the Warrior zone and was tackled by Nolan, with Ayala converting the penalty kick in the 29th minute.
It was a 3-0 lead before halftime, as sophomore Juan Ochoa (Paramount HS) collected his first of two assists when he sent a pass into the box, where freshman Daniel Garcia (Artesia HS) chipped the ball in for a goal and commanding lead.
On the day, El Camino could only muster five shots on goal, while the Falcons spent most of the game on the Warrior side of the field and finished with 21 shots on goal. Sophomore goalkeeper Danny Lizama (Duarte HS) earned his sixth shutout of the season and made two saves.
In the second half, Ochoa fed a lead pass to freshman Danny Castro (Bell HS), who fought off a Warrior defender and chipped the ball over new goalkeeper Wilfredo Figueroa in the 56th minute. Ayala closed out the scoring with his second penalty kick goal in the 83rd minute after Castro was tackled in the box.
