Cerritos College freshman diver
Anthony Mayfield (Norwalk HS)
accumulated 316.00 points in the 1-meter
competition at the Southern California Diving
Championships on Saturday and has advanced to
the state championships. Mayfield, who won the
South Coast Conference championship, finished
fifth in Southern California and will now move
on to Ohlone College for the state
championships, which will be held May 3-5.
As for the 3-meter results, freshman
Ramon
White (Lynwood HS), a
first-year diver, won the conference
championship with 211.55 points and will serve
as the second alternate at the state
championships. Mayfield was disqualified in the
3-meter event for failing to complete three of
his dives. White, who came in second place in
the conference scoring behind Mayfield in the
1-meter, finished 11th in Southern California.
Freshman
Steven
Pavon (Bell HS) also
competed in the 3-meter event and came in third
in the SCC and 15th in Southern California,
while he was disqualified in the 1-meter.
Freshman
Josh
Cotton (La Serna HS) also
entered in the 3-meter event for the Falcons.
Mayfield earned his highest score for his
fourth dive, an inward 1 1/2 somersault with a
tuck for a 2.2 degree of difficulty and
collected 44 total points. He also picked up a
solid score on his first of 11 dives, a forward
2 1/2 somersault in the tuck position, as well
as a back double-somersault in the tuck
position. His total score was just 1.50 points
behind Cody Ellis of Orange Coast College for
fourth place and only 3.35 points behind third
place's Marcus Bolder of Los Angeles Pierce
College.
In the 3-meter event, White's most difficult
dive, an inward double somersault in the tuck,
earned him the most points of his 11 dives. He
remained consistent throughout the invitational,
and had he completed his final dive, could have
spring-boarded himself into the state
championship. His 11th dive, a forward 1 1/2
somersault, with a twist ending in a freestyle
position, failed to be completed and didn't earn
him any points. As a result, his 211.55 points
was 25 points behind the sixth place finisher,
Bolder, and would have advanced him to the state
championships, as the top six automatically move
on.
