Behind the swimming of
freshman
Nikos
Kostianis (Compton HS) and Tristan
Friend, the Cerritos College men's swimming team
came in fifth place at the Mt. San Antonio Invitational
over the weekend. The Falcons compiled 251 team points,
which were more than the three other South Coast
Conference teams in the meet. Cerritos will now compete
in a conference meet on Thursday against El Camino and
Mt. San Antonio Colleges at El Camino at 3:00 p.m.
Kostainis placed
second in two events, while he won the 200-yard
backstroke with a time of 1:57.65, which establishes a
new school record. The old standard of 1:57.73 was set
by Jeff Jordan in 1979. In the 100-yard
butterfly, he came in second place with a time of 53.66,
while his time of 54.19 was good for second place in the
100-yard backstroke. As for Friend, he came in third
place in the 200-yard butterfly with a time of 2:02.51
and placed third in the 200-yard individual medley with
a time of 2:05.46. Additionally, Friend came in 11th
place in the 100-yard butterfly in a time of 57.05.
In the relay races,
the Falcons came in fifth place in both the 400-yard
freestyle (3:24) and 800-yard freestyle (7:36), while
freshman diver
Anthony
Mayfield (Norwalk HS) placed third in the
1-meter event with 166.8 points and fourth in the
3-meter event with 159.65 points.
Other solid performances came from sophomore
Eddie Kim
(Sunny Hills HS), who came in 10th place in the
400-yard individual medley, 11th place in the 1,650-yard
freestyle and 13th place in the 500-yard freestyle;
freshman
Torrence Lee (Cerritos HS), who placed
13th in the 200-yard individual medley (2:10.67),
freshman Eugene Takagi, who placed 12th in the
200-yard breaststroke (2:28.84) and freshman Jose
Aguirre (Downey HS), a 14th place finisher in
the 200-yard backstroke (2:10.90).
