The Cerritos College men's
swimming team won nine of the 15 events in their
three-way South Coast Conference meet at home on
Thursday against Pasadena City College and Los
Angeles Trade-Tech College. The end result were
wins against Pasadena City (88-39) and LA
Trade-Tech (108-15), which improves the team's
record to 4-0 overall and in the conference. The
Falcons will now host Long Beach City College
next Friday at 2:30 p.m. with the conference
championship on the line.
There were a trio of Falcons who won two
events, as sophomore
Eddie
Kim (Sunny Hills HS)
captured the 1000-yard freestyle race in a time
of 11:03.68, while his time of 5:17.53 was good
enough to win the 500-yard freestyle. He was
followed in second place in the 500-yard
freestyle by freshman
Billy
Smith (Cypress HS), who
finished in a time of 5:40.50. As for freshman
Nikos Kostianis (Warren HS),
he won the 100-yard backstroke handily in 58.47
and edged out teammate
Jose
Aguirre (Downey HS) win
the 200-yard backstroke with a time of 2:11.99.
Aguirre, who finished in a time of 2:14.13, also
placed second in the 50-yard freestyle and the
200-yard backstroke. Also winning two events was
freshman
Tristan Friend (Liberty
Christian HS), who captured both the
200-yard freestyle (1:54.29) and the 200-yard
butterfly (2:07.73). In both races, he beat out
a teammate, as freshman
AJ
Abrego (El Rancho HS)
finished second in the 200-yard freestyle
(2:02.61) and freshman
Torrence
Lee (Cerritos HS) placed
second in the 200-yard butterfly in a time of
2:19.94.
Both relay teams won their events, as the
quartet of Kostianis, Lee, Friend and Aguirre
posted a time of 1:47.74 to win the 200-yard
medley relay, while Aguirre, Lee, freshman
Jimmy Quintana (Montebello HS)
and Kim finished off the meet by winning the
400-yard freestyle in 3:34.99. In the 1-meter
diving competition, freshman
Anthony Mayfield (Norwalk HS)
beat two teammates by accumulating 204.05
points.
