The Cerritos College men's
swimming team won a huge match toward
staying in the hunt for the South Coast
Conference championship, as they defeated
cross-town rival Long Beach City College,
69-61 on Friday in the Falcon Pool. With the
win, the Falcons are now 5-0 in SCC action
and share first place with Chaffey College,
while the Vikings dropped to 3-2. The worst
Cerritos can do now is place second in the
conference, while a loss could have dropped
them down to third place after the
conference championships. Cerritos finishes
the conference season next Friday, when they
travel to Rio Hondo College to face the host
Roadrunners and Chaffey College, who is also
undefeated in conference action.
Coming up with two
back-to-back wins to help the Falcons post
the win was freshman
Nikos Kostianis (Downey HS),
who won the 100-yard freestyle easily in a
time of 48.39 and then came right back in
the next men's race an squeezed out a win in
the 200-yard backstroke. Trailing LBCC's
Matt Maya most of the race, Kostianis came
on strong in the final 25 yards and touched
in 2:04.12, while Maya was clocked in
2:04.39. That gave Cerritos crucial team
points towards winning the meet, while a
second place finish in the 50-yard freestyle
by freshman
Jose Aguirre (Downey HS)
kept the Vikings from getting eight team
points in the race and it gave Cerritos
three for his second place and six for the
Vikings, who took first and third place.
Aguirre's time of 23.28 just beat out Pavle
Filopovic's time of 23.40.
Kostianis also won the
100-yard butterfly in a time of 52.84 and
was joined by freshman
Tristan Friend (Liberty
Christian HS), who won three events.
Friend captured the 200-yard freestyle
(1:50.26) by over four seconds, the 200-yard
butterfly (2:01.15) with freshman teammate
Eugene Takagi (Kennedy HS)
placing third in 2:16.47, and the 200-yard
individual medley in a time of 2:00.68,
which was four seconds faster than the
second place finisher.
Also winning a race was
freshman
Torrence Lee (Cerritos HS),
who captured the 200-yard breaststroke in a
time of 2:19.75, while he placed second in
the 100-yard breaststroke in 1:04.27. The
200-yard medley relay team of freshmen
Matthew Whalen (St. John
Bosco HS),
Steven Baughman (Western HS),
David Correa (Downey HS)
and
Pat Muniz (Santa Fe HS)
placed first in a time of 1:42.75, while
freshman divers
Anthony Mayfield (Norwalk
HS) and
Ramon White (Lynwood HS)
placed first and second, respectively.
