With the first day of the
South Coast Conference
Championships behind them,
the Cerritos College men's
swimming team is locked in
second place with 198 team
points. They trail only
Chaffey College, who
has compiled 262 points,
with the second day
scheduled to start at 9:00
a.m. at Pasadena City
College on Friday.
The best finishes turned in
by the Falcons were a trio
of third place finishes,
with two of those coming in
relay races. In the 200-yard
freestyle relay, the team of
freshmen
Louie Espinoza
(Montebello HS) and
Miguel Villalobos
(Whittier HS),
along with sophomores
Tristan Friend
(Liberty Christian HS)
and
Nikos
Kostianis
(Downey HS) turned
in a time of 1:29.33, which
was just shy of the second
place time of 1:29.01 turned
in by Pasadena City. Joining
Espinoza,
Kostianis and Friend
in the 400-yard medley relay
was sophomore
Kevin Nguyen (Cerritos
HS), with the quartet
turning in a time of
3:42.36, good for third
place.
The best individual finish
came in the 200-yard
individual medley, as
Espinoza came in third place
with a time of 2:00.27, with
Nguyen coming in ninth place
at 2:09.18. Friend came in
fourth place in the 500-yard
freestyle with a time of
4:51.66, with sophomore
teammate
Billy Smith (Cypress
HS) registering an
eighth place in 5:20.35. In
the 50-yard freestyle,
Villalobos finished in fifth
place with a time of 23.13,
while freshman
Ryan
Tamula (Cerritos
HS) came in ninth place
at 23.14. He had to come
back later in the day in a
swim-off to see if he
qualifies for the state
championships and beat
Chaffey's Andre
Tiebout with a time
of 23.27, which was .25
seconds faster than
Tiebout.
