The Cerritos College
men's swimming team
finished the three-day
South Coast Conference
Tournament with a second
place finish with 643
team points, trailing
only Chaffey College,
who won the championship
with 791 team points.
But along the way,
sophomore
Nikos Kostianis
(Downey HS)
continued to set
records, as he added his
second new school
record, while he also
broke a pool record at
Pasadena City College on
Saturday.
Swimming in the 200-yard
backstroke, Kostianis
cruised to a time of
1:51.20, which not only
broke his previous
school record of
1:52.82, it set a new
pool record. Back in
2002, Edmond Shepard of
El Camino College set
the mark with a time of
1:51.25, only to have
Kostianis beat the
record and finish three
seconds ahead of the
second place finisher.
In the prelims,
Kostianis qualified for
the finals with a
relaxing time of
2:07.35. Sophomore
Kevin Nguyen
(Cerritos HS)
finished sixth in the
200-yard backstroke with
a time of 2:11.40.
Earlier in the weekend,
Kostianis set a new
school record in the
100-butterfly with a
time of 50.37 and won
the event.
Other solid performances
by the Falcons came from
sophomore
Tristan Friend
(Liberty Christian
HS), who placed
third in the 200-yard
butterfly with a time of
1:58.24, while sophomore
Billy Smith
(Cypress HS) finished
in third place in his
specialty, the 1650-yard
freestyle, with a time
of 18:01.29. His
teammate, freshman
Adam Arambula
(Kennedy HS),
finished right behind
him with a time of
19:08.27, good for
fourth place.
In the 400-yard
freestyle relay, the
quartet of freshman
Louie Espinoza
(Montebello HS),
Friend, freshman
Mark Zuniga
(Downey HS) and
Kostianis came in third
place with a time of
3:14.95. They were beat
out for second place by
.02 seconds by Long
Beach City College.
Those that have
qualified will now
compete in the state
championships, which
will take place next
Thursday through
Saturday at
Saddleback College.
