Competing in an informal
South Coast Conference Pentathlon, the
Cerritos College men’s swimming team got a
chance to see some of the other competition
they will be facing this season. There were
several very strong performances, although
the squad was not at full strength. Missing
the multi-event meet was sophomore
Nikos Kostianis (Downey HS),
who qualified for the state championships
last season in seven events and won the
200-yard butterfly. The team will now enter
the Mt. San Antonio Invitational, which will
be held this weekend.
Leading the way for the
Falcons was sophomore
Tristan Friend (Liberty Christian
HS), who swam well in all five of the
events. His time of 54.62 in the 100-yard
butterfly was the third fastest, as was his
clocking in the 100-yard freestyle of 50.10.
Right behind Friend in the 100-yard
butterfly was freshman
Louie Espinoza (Montebello HS),
who came in fourth place with a time of
54.92, with his time of 1:00.19 in the
100-yard backstroke good for fifth overall.
Friend placed fifth in the 100-yard
backstroke at 1:00.51, while his time of
2:02.65 was good for fourth place in the
200-yard individual medley. Sophomore
Kevin Nguyen (Cerritos HS)
was also solid from top to bottom in the
meet.
In
the diving competition, freshman
Nashon Hull (Bellflower HS)
came in third place in the 3-meter event,
with freshman teammate
Tony Viramontes (Katella HS) placing
third in the 1-meter diving. In the
three-meter, Hull received his best score on
his third dive, an inward 1½ somersault with
a tuck, which scored his 17.50 points from
the three judges. For Viramontes, he was
consistent in his dives, but did get his
best score of 15.50 on a reverse, somersault
with a tuck, which was his third dive.
