On the
strength of their relay teams and three
great finishes by sophomore
Nikos
Kostianos (Downey
HS), the Cerritos College men's
swimming team came in ninth place at the
Cuesta Invitational over the
weekend after compiling 146 team points.
Next up for the team will be a three-way
South Coast Conference meet at Long
Beach City College, with the Falcons,
Vikings and Rio Hondo College taking
part.
As for
Kostianis, he came in first place
in both the 100-yard butterfly and
100-yard backstroke, while he was just
edged out in the 200-yard butterfly and
had to settle for second place. His time
of 51.88 beat all competitors in the
100-yard butterfly, as did his clocking
of 53.02 in the 100-yard backstroke. But
it was Weston
Locatell of Citrus College that
beat him in the 200-yard butterfly, with
a time of 1:55.45, just besting the time
of 1:55.56 by
Kostianis. Also swimming well in
the 200-yard butterfly was freshman
Miguel Villalobos (Whittier
HS), who came in 19th place with a
time of 2:23.17.
The
five relay teams that competed for the
Falcons comprised 76 of the team's
points, with the 400-yard freestyle team
leading with way with a seventh place
finish in a time of 3:23, while the
800-yard freestyle (eighth place) and
200-yard medley relays (ninth place)
also finished in the top 10. The
200-yard freestyle relay team placed
11th in the invitational.
Freshman
Louie Espinoza (Montebello
HS) turned in a 14th place showing
in the 200-yard breaststroke (2:21.81),
with sophomore
Nick Young (Kennedy HS)
coming in 21st place in the 100-yard
breaststroke with a time of 1:06.70. In
the diving competition, freshman
Nashon
Hull (Bellflower HS)
came in 11th place in the 1-meter
competition and 13th place at 3-meters.
