This Week's Sports Schedule

03.15.08 - FALCONS COME IN NINTH PLACE AT CUESTA INVITE

On the strength of their relay teams and three great finishes by sophomore Nikos Kostianos (Downey HS), the Cerritos College men's swimming team came in ninth place at the Cuesta Invitational over the weekend after compiling 146 team points. Next up for the team will be a three-way South Coast Conference meet at Long Beach City College, with the Falcons, Vikings and Rio Hondo College taking part.

As for Kostianis, he came in first place in both the 100-yard butterfly and 100-yard backstroke, while he was just edged out in the 200-yard butterfly and had to settle for second place. His time of 51.88 beat all competitors in the 100-yard butterfly, as did his clocking of 53.02 in the 100-yard backstroke. But it was Weston Locatell of Citrus College that beat him in the 200-yard butterfly, with a time of 1:55.45, just besting the time of 1:55.56 by Kostianis. Also swimming well in the 200-yard butterfly was freshman Miguel Villalobos (Whittier HS), who came in 19th place with a time of 2:23.17.

The five relay teams that competed for the Falcons comprised 76 of the team's points, with the 400-yard freestyle team leading with way with a seventh place finish in a time of 3:23, while the 800-yard freestyle (eighth place) and 200-yard medley relays (ninth place) also finished in the top 10. The 200-yard freestyle relay team placed 11th in the invitational.

Freshman Louie Espinoza (Montebello HS) turned in a 14th place showing in the 200-yard breaststroke (2:21.81), with sophomore Nick Young (Kennedy HS) coming in 21st place in the 100-yard breaststroke with a time of 1:06.70.
