Last year,
Cerritos College
men's swimmer
Nikos Kostianis
(Downey HS)
won the state
championship in
the 200-yard
butterfly, while
he placed second
in the 100-yard
backstroke and
third in the
100-yard
butterfly. After
the second day
of the
California
Community
College Swimming
State
Championships,
which are taking
place at
Saddleback
College,
Kostianis has
already bested
his finishes in
the two races he
didn't win. On
Friday, not
only did
Kostianis win
the state
championship in
the 100-yard
butterfly and
100-yard
backstroke, he
broke his own
school records
along the way.
The final day of
the state
championships
will be
tomorrow.
In the 100-yard
butterfly,
Kostianis
checked in with
an amazing time
of 48.79, which
shattered his
old record of
50.26 he set
last week at the
South Coast
Conference
Championships.
He came right
back in the
100-yard
backstroke by
turning in a
time of 50.26,
which eclipsed
his record time
of 51.57 he set
in last year's
state
championships.
On Saturday, he
will get a
chance to defend
his title in the
200-yard
butterfly.
Also competing
on the day was
sophomore
Tristian Friend
(Liberty
Christian HS),
who swam in the
200-yard
freestyle and
placed 21st with
a time of
1:47.07.
Freshman
Louis Espinoza
(Montebello
HS), who
qualified in the
100-yard
breaststroke,
was disqualified
and did not get
to compete.
Along with
Kostianis
swimming in the
200-yard
butterfly, where
he will be
joined by
Friend, Espinoza
will swim in the
200-yard
breaststroke.
The Falcons are
currently in
18th place with
40 team points,
all from
Kostianis.
