Concluding
one of the
most storied
careers in
Cerritos
College
men's
swimming
history,
sophomore
Nikos
Kostianis
(Downey
HS) won
his third
state
championship
of the year
and fourth
in his
career, as
he captured
the 200-yard
butterfly on
the final
day of the
California
Community
College
Men's
Swimming
Championships,
which took
place at
Saddleback
College.
Kostianis,
who won the
100-yard
backstroke
and the
100-yard
butterfly on
the second
day and set
new school
records in
each race,
finished off
the trifecta
by breaking
another of
his records
in
defending the
200-yard
butterfly
championship
he won last
year.
Kostianis
checked in
with a
blistering
time of
1:49.62,
which was
not only
3.49 seconds
faster than
the second
place
finisher, it
also
obliterated
his old
record o
1:51.48 that
he set in
last year's
state
championship.
Joining
Kostianis in
the race was
sophomore
Tristan
Friend
(Liberty
Christian HS),
who turned
in a sixth
place finish
with a very
good time of
1:58.27. The
final Falcon
entry on the
day was
freshman
Louie
Espinoza
(Montebello
HS),
who placed
10th in the
200-yard
breaststroke
with a time
of 2:09.50.
For the
tournament,
the Falcons
finished in
16th place
with 80 team
points.
In wrapping
up his
Cerritos
career,
Kostianis
won four
state
championships,
while
finishing
second
(100-yard
backstroke
as a
freshman) in
another
event and
third
(100-yard
butterfly as
a freshman)
in
another. He
also set
five
individual
school
records
(several of
which he
broke
numerous
times) and
swam on one
school
record relay
team.
