The Cerritos
College men's swimming team opened South Coast
Conference on Friday in a three-way meet and split
with the other two teams they faced. The Falcons
(1-1) defeated host Pasadena City College, 69-62,
while they dropped an 88-43 decision to Mt. San
Antonio College. The team will now travel to Long
Beach City College on Friday at 2:30 p.m. to face
the host Vikings, along with Los Angeles Trade-Tech
College in another three-way conference meet.
Over the course of
the meet, the Falcons finished in second place in
six events and in third place in three more events.
The only winner was freshman diver
William
Lasang (Gahr HS) in the
1-meter diving, as he compiled 159.50 points.
In the 1000-yard
freestyle, freshman
Matt
Mendoza (South Gate HS)
finished in second place with a time of 10:47.66,
while his time of 5:14.42 put him in second place in
the 500-yard freestyle. Sophomore
Torrence Lee
(Cerritos HS) was able finish the 200-yard
freestyle race in 1:56.78, good enough for second
place. As for sophomore
Ryan Leung
(Wan Yan College, China) in the 100-yard
backstroke, his time of 1:01.87 put him in second
place, with freshman
Berner
Figueroa (Paramount HS) coming
up just short in the 50-yard freestyle, as his time
of 22.94 put him in second. Figueroa picked up
another second place finish in the 100-yard
freestyle, with his time of 50.01 just shy of first
place.
The 200-yard
medley relay team of Mendoza, freshman
Dennis
Caggiano (Calvary Chapel HS),
Lee and Figueroa came in third place in a time of
1:49.58, while the 400-yard freestyle relay team
also place third in a time of 3:27.69. That team was
comprised of Lee, Caggiano, sophomore
Alan
Nevarez (Downey HS) and
Figueroa.
Caggiano posted a
time of 1:05.27, good for third in the 100-yard
breaststroke and was third in the 200-yard
breaststroke (2:28.20), while freshman
Emerson
Mendoza (South Gate HS) placed
third in the 200-yard backstroke in a time of
2:17.15.
