Facing a pair of
teams in a South Coast Conference meet in Friday,
the Cerritos College men's swimming team won six
events, as they split with the two schools. The
Falcons (2-2) defeated Los Angeles Trade-Tech
College, 118-10, but were defeated by host Long
Beach City College, 66-64. The team will now travel
to El Camino College on Friday for another 2:30 p.m.
conference meet against the host Warriors and Rio
Hondo College.
The meet came down
to the final event as the Long Beach City team
easily took the 400-yard freestyle relay with a time
of 3:23.87, while Cerritos was second at 3:34.47.
Mendoza won both
the 500-yard freestyle (5:15.23) and 200-yard
backstroke (2:16.44), while he came in second place
in the 1000-yard freestyle with a new school-record
time of 10:26.80. Mendoza broke with old record time
of 10:28.46, set by Jack Robinson in the 1968 state
championships. Right behind Mendoza in the 200-yard
backstroke was Lee, who placed second in a time of
2:22.22.
As for Figueroa,
he posted three second place finishes, which
included the 50-yard freestyle (23.11), 200-yard
freestyle (1:52.21) and 100-yard butterfly (56.41).
Sophomore
Alan
Nevarez (Downey HS) also swam
well in the 50-yard freestyle, as he came in fourth
place in a time of 24.34. Leung won the 100-yard
backstroke with a time of 1:01.73, while Lee won the
200-yard IM, as he finished in 2:07.59.
In the 100-yard
breaststroke, freshman
Dennis
Caggiano (Calvary Chapel HS)
placed second in 1:04.55, with Lee coming in third
at 1:08.37. As for freshman
Alex Rico
(Bell Gardens HS) in the 200-yard
butterfly, he placed second in a time of 2:26.83,
while freshman
Brian Cruz
(Long Beach Wilson HS) was a close third in
2:27.33. Caggiano also placed second in the 200-yard
breststroke with a time of 2:27.45.
Freshmen divers
Edgar Villa (Gahr HS) came in
first place in the 1-meter event with 157.70 points,
with freshman teammate
William
Lansang (Gahr HS) finishing in
second place with 120.50 points.
