Led by three wins
from both freshmen
Matt
Mendoza (La Serna HS) and
Berner
Figueroa (Paramount HS), the
Cerritos College men's swimming team
picked up a pair of South Coast Conference wins on
Friday. The Falcons defeated both El Camino College
(70.5-60.5) and Rio Hondo College (118-12) to run
their record to 4-2 on the season. The team will now
travel to Chaffey College on Friday for a 2:30 p.m.
meet that will close out their conference regular
season.
For Mendoza, he
captured the 500 yard freestyle (5:13.49), 1000-yard
freestyle (10:44.65) and the 400-yard IM in a time
of 4:38.08, which helped the team pick up a pair of
wins. Also making a major contribution was Figueroa,
who won three freestyle races - 50-yard freestyle
(23.16), 200-yard freestyle (51.13) and 200-yard
freestyle, with a time of 1:55.58. he was followed
closely in the 200-yard freestyle race by freshman
Pat Muniz (Santa Fe HS), who
came in second place in 1:58.70.
Also winning races for the Falcons were freshman
Dennis Caggiano ( Calvary Chapel
HS) in the 100-yard breaststroke with a
time of 1:05.77. Freshman
Mark
Diaz ( La Mirada HS) also
won the 200-yard breaststroke in a time of
2:25.88, with Caggiano in second place at
2:26.79.
Sophomore
Torrence Lee
(Cerritos HS) posted a pair of second place
finishes, as he swam well in the 100-yard butterfly
(58.82) and 200-yard backstroke (2:16.80). Sophomore
Ryan Leung (Wan Yan College, China)
placed second in the 100-yard backstroke (1:02.46),
while freshman
Alex Rico
(Cerritos HS) finished in second place in
the 200-yard butterfly with a time of 2:24.84.
