05.28.10 - RECORD-SETTING SWIMMER EARNS ALL-AMERICAN HONORS

After winning three titles at the State Championships, as well as earning Swimmer of the Meet, Cerritos College freshman swimmer PJ Gabayeron (Cerritos HS) has now earned All-American honors in three individual races, as well as in three relay races. Gabayeron was named All-American in all three of the races he won at the state championships - 200-yard IM, 100-yard breaststroke and 200-yard breaststroke. He also swam a leg of the 400-yard freestyle relay, 400-yard medley relay and 800-yard freestyle relay, which earned All-American honors.

In both the 200-yard IM and 200-yard breaststroke, Gabayeron posted the second fastest time in the country, while his time in the 100-yard breaststroke was the sixth fastest. For the 200-yard IM, Gabayeron won the state championship and set a new school record with a time of 1:52.33, which was just shy of the national best time of 1:52.20, set by Daniel Corley of Lincoln (IL) College.

He also won the state title and set a new school record in the 200-yard breaststroke with a time of 2:01.96, with Jordan Arencibia of Indian River (FL) College posting a time of 2:01.18 for the fastest in the country. It was four swimmers from Indian River (FL) College that bested Gabayeron in the 100-yard breaststroke, but his time of 56.59 won the state championship and set a new school record.

In the 800-yard freestyle, the quartet of sophomores Berner Figueroa (Paramount HS), Matt Mendoza (Downey HS), Ethan Klotzer (Downey HS) and Gabayeron set a new school record with a time of 7:08.07, which was the 12th fastest in the country and took 10th place at the state championships. As for the 400-yard medley relay, the time of 3:36.68 was the 16th fastest in the country and was turned in by Gabayeron, sophomore Louie Espinoza (Montebello HS), Figueroa and freshman Pat McCarthy (Downey HS). It was Gabayeron, Klotzer, McCarthy and Figueroa that posted the time of 3:13.76 in the 400-yard freestyle relay, which landed them in 15th place at the state championships and was the 16th fastest time in the country.
