04.27.12 - All Players eliminated from
Ojai Tournament
Both Cerritos
College men's doubles teams and their lone singles
player were eliminated on Friday in the 112th Annual
Ojai Tournament. Freshman singles player
Chris Nguy
(Cypress HS) was looking to defeat Santa
Barbara City College's Miles Seeman for the second time
in two weeks in their Round of 32 match, but an injury
forced Nguy to bow out of the match, where he was
trailing, 6-3, 4-6, 2-5 at the time. Seeman was seeded
#10 for the tournament...[more]
04.26.12 - Both doubles and one
singles still alive at Ojai
At the 112th Annual Ojai Tennis Tournament, the Cerritos
College men's tennis team saw both of their doubles
teams, as well as one of their three singles players
advance past the first day on Thursday. In singles play,
freshman
Chris Nguy (Cypress HS) earned a bye in
the Round of 128 and then registered a win in the Round
of 64 to earn a rematch against 10th-seeded Miles Seeman
of Santa Barbara City College in the Round of 32. Two
weeks ago, Nguy recorded a 4-6, 6-4, 10-3 win in the
Falcons final match of the season. The two will face
each other at 8:00 a.m. on Friday...[more]
04.20.12 - Cerritos advances two
singles and three doubles
With only a three-team South Coast Conference this
season, it called for an abbreviated South Coast
Conference men's tennis tournament, which was held at
Cerritos College on Thursday and Friday. The Falcons,
who came in second place in the team standings, advanced
a pair of singles players, while all three doubles teams
will move on to the Southern California Regional
Tournament, which will take place in San Diego on May
3-5. All three doubles teams automatically qualified,
because there were only nine that would have competed in
the SCC Tournament and one had to drop out due to an
injury...[more]
04.10.12 - Falcons post big individual
win
In their final team dual
match of the season, the Cerritos College men's tennis
team may have dropped a 7-2 non-conference decision to
Santa Barbara City College on Tuesday, but they saw
their top singles player record another upset victory.
Freshman
Chris Nguy (Cypress HS) handed SBCC's
Miles Seemann his first loss of the season by coming
back for a 4-6, 6-4, 10-3 win, which will help his
seeding for both the Ojai Tournament and Southern
California Regional Tournament. The Falcons (11-9) will
also be hosting the South Coast Conference Tournament,
which will take place April 19-20.
Also looking for a comeback, but coming up short was
freshman Todd Jenkins (Cabrillo HS), who came up short in a 6-1, 6-4, 9-11 loss to Troy Akin in the #4 singles position. The Vaqueros (8-3) won five of the six singles matches, while the Falcons were able to record a win at the #3 doubles slot. Jenkins teamed with sophomore
Anthony Peterson (Gahr HS) for a hard-fought 9-7 win. Nguy and sophomore
Kyle Porter (Lakewood HS) gave Seemann and Joshua Crisp-Jones all they could handle in an 8-6 match at the top of the doubles ladder...[more]
04.03.12 - Doubles sweep leads to
victory
Heading into doubles play, the Cerritos College men's
tennis team knew they needed to sweep visiting Irvine
Valley College in order to come away with the
non-conference victory. The Falcons, who dropped a pair
of third-set tie-breakers in singles play, pulled off
the three wins to post a 5-4 win over the Lasers (9-4)
on Tuesday. Cerritos (11-8) will now host Santa Barbara
City College in a non-conference match next Tuesday...[more]
03.29.12 - Cerritos drops conference
match to El Camino
In their final South Coast Conference match of the
season, the Cerritos College men's tennis team almost
pulled off one of their biggest upsets of the season
against one of the top doubles teams in the country. The
duo of freshman
Chris Nguy
(Cypress HS) and sophomore
Kyle Porter
(Lakewood HS) looked to defeat El Camino's
All-American pair of Atilla Lassu and Andrew Sarawasi,
but came up short in a thrilling 6-4, 3-6, 10-7 match.
Even if the upset had happened, the Falcons still came
up short in a 6-3 decision against the Warriors.
Cerritos (10-8, 3-3) still have a pair of non-conference
home matches before they play host to the conference
tournament. The team will host Irvine Valley College on
Tuesday at 2:00 p.m. in a non-conference match...[more]
03.27.12 - Falcons fight back for win
Although the Cerritos College men's tennis team missed
out on a chance to take a 4-2 lead into doubles play in
their non-conference match at Glendale College on
Tuesday, they did pull out a team win when they came up
victorious in two of the three doubles matches for a 5-4
team victory. The win by the Falcons improves their
season record to 10-7, as the team will now travel to El
Camino College on Thursday for a 2:00 p.m. South Coast
Conference match...[more]
03.22.12 - Team returns to winning
ways
Coming
off a pair of non-conference matches against
out-of-state competition, one in which they were
defeated by an NCAA Division III power, the Cerritos
College men's tennis team returned to South Coast
Conference play and responded with a convincing 8-1 win
over visiting Mt. San Antonio College on Thursday. With
the win, the Falcons improved to 9-7 overall and 3-2
in SCC play. Although they have just one more conference
match on their schedule, the team will also play three
non-conference matches, including a 2:00 p.m. contest at
Glendale College next Tuesday.
In the win over the Mounties, Cerritos moved their
singles ladder around a bit, while they did the same in
doubles play. At the top of the ladder, freshman
Chris Nguy
(Cypress HS) registered a straight set win, while
sophomores
Kyle Porter (Lakewood HS) and
Anthony
Peterson (Gahr HS) swapped positions. The
result was a 6-1, 6-1 win over Porter in the #2
position, while Peterson picked up his first win of the
year, a 6-2, 6-1 decision in the #3 spot. Sophomore
Andrew Turner
(Cypress HS) moved up to #4 for the first time
this year and posted a 6-4, 6-0 win, while freshman
Mark Herrera
(Don Bosco Tech HS) improved to 5-0 this season
with his 6-2, 6-1 win. Freshman
Kevin Wall
(Lakewood HS) saw his first singles action of the
year and was defeated in straight sets...[more]
03.20.12 - Cerritos defeated by
defending national champions
Hosting the defending NCAA Division III National
Champions, the Cerritos College men's tennis team had
their hands full all day, as they dropped a 9-0
non-conference decision against Amherst (MA) College on
Tuesday. The loss dropped the Falcons record to 8-7 on
the year, while they will resume South Coast Conference
play at 2:00 p.m. on Thursday at Mt. San Antonio
College.
Cerritos was swept in all six singles matches, but came
close to extending two of them to a third set
tie-breaker. In the #4 position, freshman
Brandon Chang (Valencia HS) dropped a 6-2, 7-6 (6) decision against Justin Hendrix, while sophomore
Andrew Turner (Cypress HS) played well against senior Chris Morrison before dropping a 7-5, 6-3 decision. Aside from those two matches, the Falcons won a combined eight games in the other four singles...[more]
03.14.12 - Falcons post non-conference
victory
Hosting Pima (AZ) Community
College on Wednesday, the Cerritos College men's tennis
team handed their opponent a second straight loss in as
many days on their California trip. The Falcons (8-6)
rebounded from a tough South Coast Conference loss the
day before and came back to post an 8-1 non-conference
win over Pima. Cerritos will now host another
out-of-state college, as they welcome Amherst (MA)
College, an NCAA Division III school that has advanced
to the National Championships three years in a row and
won the title in 2011. Not unfamiliar with
California, Amherst plays 15 of their matches against
community colleges and four-year schools in the state
over a five-day period, where they will break
their squad into three teams..[more]
03.13.12 - Cerritos drops close
conference match
In
their first South Coast Conference meeting against El
Camino College, the Cerritos College men's tennis team
dropped four of six matches that went into a third-set
tiebreaker, which was the deciding factor in their loss.
On Tuesday, the Falcons won three of the five third-set
tiebreakers in singles play and one in doubles action
against the Warriors, but it still wasn't enough, as the
team dropped a 5-4 decision. The win by El Camino
clinched the conference title, with only three teams
remaining in the SCC and just two matches remaining.
Cerritos (7-6, overall, 2-2 SCC) will now host Pima (AZ)
College at 3:30 p.m. in a non-conference match.
All four of the matches won by the Falcons went to a
tie-breaker, with freshman
Chris Nguy
(Cypress HS) getting some revenge against Andrew
Sarawasi, who defeated him the first time they met up. Nguy
split the first two sets, 6-2, 3-6 and was trailing in
the tie-breaker before coming back to record a 10-5 win.
It was the same situation for freshman
Todd Jenkins
(Cabrillo HS) in the #4 position against Andy
Stier, as he split the first two sets (6-4, 4-6) and
trailed in the tie-breaker. But Jenkins fought back for
a 10-7 win to earn a team point, with sophomore
Kyle Porter
(Lakewood HS) dropping the first set (6-7) to
Kevin Nakasone and then battling back to win the set,
6-2, 10-6...[more]
03.06.12 - Falcons start second round
with win
The Cerritos College men's tennis team started the
second round of the three-team South Coast Conference
the way they did in the first round - with a win over
Mt. San Antonio College on Tuesday. The Falcons upped
their conference mark to 2-1 and season record to 7-5
with a convincing 8-1 win over the Mounties. Mixed in
with their conference matches this season are
non-conference duals, as Cerritos is scheduled to host
Albion (MI) College, an NCAA Division III school, in a
2:00 p.m. match on Friday...[more]
03.02.12 - Team posts 6-3 win over
Palomar
Aside from going 0-2 in 10-point, third set
tie-breakers, the Cerritos College men's tennis team
handled visiting Palomar College quite easily on Friday
in their non-conference match. The Falcons (6-5) won all
three doubles matches in straight sets, while they
picked up three more straight set singles wins. The team
continued to have difficulty when matches go to a third
set tie-breaker, dropping two more to run their record
to 4-11 on the season. Cerritos will resume South Coast
Conference action on Tuesday when they travel to Mt.
San Antonio for a 2:00 p.m. match...[more]
02.28.12 - Cerritos suffers conference
loss
For the first time in his eight-year history, Cerritos
College men's tennis head coach
Alvin Kim
saw his team lose to El Camino College, as they did on
Tuesday, 7-2 in a South Coast Conference road match.
Aside from the year that powerhouses College of the
Desert and Mt. San Jacinto College were part of the SCC,
the only traditional team that one of Kim's team has
ever lost to was Mt. San Antonio College, against whom
they lost to twice last season. After a non-conference
home match against Palomar College at 2:00 p.m. on
Friday, the Falcons will travel to Mt. San Antonio
College next Tuesday for a conference match...[more]
02.24.12 - Falcons easily beat rivals
In past years, Long Beach City College had been
considered the true cross-town rival for all Cerritos
College athletic teams. But, with the departure of the
Viking men's tennis program, the Falcons have looked at
Cypress College as their biggest rival, even though they
reside in different conferences. Cerritos got the best
of their rival on Friday, as they defeated the Chargers,
8-1 in a non-conference match. The win was the third in
a row for Cerritos, who improved to 5-4 on the season.
The team will now travel to El Camino College on Tuesday
for a 2:00 p.m. South Coast Conference match...[more]
02.23.12 - Strong singles play leads
to win
Thanks
to four singles victories, the Cerritos College men's
tennis team was able to even their record on the year at
4-4 after defeating visiting Orange Coast College, 6-3
in a non-conference match on Thursday. The Falcons
received a pair of wins at the bottom of the ladder, the
biggest being a three-set win by freshman
Mark Herrera (Don Bosco Tech HS), who held on for a 6-3, 5-7, 10-8 win over Matt Lee. A loss would have sent the teams into doubles play even, but the Falcons did win two of the three in doubles action. Cerritos will now travel to El Camino College on Tuesday at 2:00 p.m. for a South Coast Conference match.
Freshman Chris Nguy (Cypress HS) continued to play well in the #1 position, as he improved to 6-2 on the year after recording a 6-2, 6-2 win over Pat Wright. However, in doubles action, Nguy and sophomore
Anthony Peterson (Lakewood HS) fell to 1-6 on the season when they were upended by Wright and Rex Miller, 1-6, 5-7. Peterson also remained winless in singles action after he was swept by Miller in the #2 position...[more]
02.21.12 - Cerritos opens conference
with win
After
playing a rigorous non-conference schedule, the Cerritos
College men's tennis team opened with a convincing 7-2
win over visiting Mt. San Antonio on Tuesday afternoon
in their South Coast Conference opener. With the
departure of several schools from the SCC, there are
only three teams remaining, and each team (El Camino is
the third) will play each other three times to determine
the conference champion. Filling the voids in the
schedule will be more non-conference matches, with the
Falcons (3-4, 0-1) hosting Orange Coast College at 2:00
p.m. on Thursday...[more]
02.16.12 - Falcons upended by San
Diego Mesa
Still looking for the right singles order in the ladder,
the Cerritos College men's tennis team dropped a 7-2
non-conference decision against a much-improved San
Diego Mesa College team on Friday. The Falcons (2-4),
who have now had just about every player on the roster
appear in singles play, as well as competing in multiple
steps on the ladder, will open South Coast Conference
play on Tuesday at 2:00 p.m. when they travel to Mt. San
Antonio College...[more]
02.14.12 - Cerritos pulls out win over
LA Pierce
Although visiting Los Angeles Pierce College was playing
without two of their top players due to injuries, the
Cerritos College men's tennis team had their hands full
in their non-conference match on Tuesday. The Falcons
snapped their three-match losing streak with a 5-4 win,
thanks in part to a pair of forfeit wins. Cerritos (2-3)
will now travel down to San Diego Mesa College on
Thursday for a 2:00 p.m. non-conference match...[more]
02.10.12 - Close singles play
determines outcome
For the
Cerritos College men's tennis team, their 7-2
non-conference loss to Saddleback College on Friday
could have easily been a win in their favor. Despite
losing all six singles matches, the Falcons saw three of
them go to a third set, while another could have been
extended to a tie-breaker. But the loss was the third in
a row for Cerritos (1-3), who will now host Los Angeles
Pierce College at 2:00 p.m. next Tuesday.
In two of the three
singles matches that went to a third set tie-breaker,
the Falcons won the first set, but saw the Gauchos (4-0)
rally back to win. In the #3 position, sophomore
Kyle
Porter (Lakewood HS) opened up
with a 6-4 win over Sina Sharifi, but dropped
the next set, 6-2 and then the tie-breaker, 10-7. It
was the same for freshman
Todd
Jenkins (Cabrillo HS) in the
#4 position in the ladder. A 6-3 first-set win was
followed by a 7-5 loss and then an 11-9 setback
against Jake Barnard. After freshman
Brandon
Chang (Valencia HS) was handed
a 6-3 loss in the first set against Chris Bloom at
#5, he shot back with a 6-2 win, but was easily
defeated in the tie-breaker...[more]
02.09.12 - Falcons defeated by Mt. San
Jacinto
Facing
one of the contending teams for the state championship,
the Cerritos College men's tennis team had their hands
full against Mt. San Jacinto College in a non-conference
match on Thursday. The Falcons dropped their second
match in a row against a team full of international
players, as the Eagles posted a 9-0 victory. Cerritos
(1-2) will now host Saddleback College at 2:00 p.m. on
Friday in a non-conference make-up match that was
postponed on Tuesday.
In singles action, the only player who came close to
winning a set was freshman
Todd Jenkins
(Cabrillo HS), who was defeated, 6-3, 6-7 (5) in
the #5 position by Godi Enock. Sophomore
Kyle Porter
(Lakewood HS), who dropped a 7-5 decision in the
#3 spot to Lazlo Irme, was forced to retire due to an
injury. Jenkins was also forced to sit out doubles play
due an injury suffered in singles play. Mt. San Jacinto's
lineup is so deep, their #6 singles player, Marcio Dalpont advanced
to the quarterfinals of the Fall ITA Tournament...[more]
02.02.12 - Team drops match to Ventura
 One
of the better teams in the state each year, the
Ventura College men's tennis team spoiled the home
opener for Cerritos College on Thursday, as they
posted a 7-2 victory. The loss by the Falcons evens
their record at 1-1 on the year, as they now host
another of the state's elite, Mt. San Jacinto
College at 2:00 p.m. next Thursday in a
non-conference match.
Cerritos did receive a strong showing from freshman
#1 singles player,
Chris Nguy
( Cypress HS), who registered a 6-2, 7-5 win
over Dylan Cleary to give the Falcons one of their
team points. However, the remainder of the singles
ladder was controlled by the Pirates. Sophomore
Anthony
Peterson ( Gahr HS) was able to win
four games in the second set, but was defeated, 6-0,
6-4, while sophomore
Kyle Porter
( Lakewood HS) was defeated 6-2, 6-3 in the #3
position...[ more]
01.31.12 - Cerritos opens season with
big win
The Cerritos College men's tennis team opened the
2012 season with a 9-0 non-conference win at Victor
Valley on Tuesday. They will look for their second
win in their home opener on Thursday at 2:00 p.m.
against Ventura College, one of the state's elite
teams.
Leading the way for the Falcons (1-0) was a quartet
of freshmen seeing their first collegiate action. At
the top of the ladder was freshman Chris Nguy
( Cypress HS), who surrendered just two games
in his straight set win. As a team, Cerritos lost
just four games in singles play, with sophomore
Kyle Porter ( Lakewood HS), along with
freshmen Todd Jenkins ( Cabrillo HS)

05.14.11 - Falcon pair falls short on
ultimate goal
Looking to be the first Cerritos College men's tennis
doubles team to win the California Community College
Athletic Association championships, sophomores
Derek Siddiqui
(Los Alamitos HS) and
Johnny Chai
(Cerritos HS/UC Riverside) were probably
expecting to play #2-seeded Alex Sarkissian and Trevor
Campbell of Glendale College in the championship match
at Fresno City College this weekend. The Falcon duo,
seeded #1 in Southern California after their win in the
Southern California Championships, were just as shocked
as anyone when Cypress College's Oliver Andrzejczuk and Torsten
Keil-Long posted a 7-6, 3-6, 6-3 win in the other
semi-final to earn the right to face the Cerritos tandem
that handed Rodrigio Shaefer and Sergio Chip of College
of the Desert a 6-4, 5-7, 6-2 decision in their
semi-final match.
The championships pitting Siddiqui and Chai against the Chargers duo would be a re-match of their meeting in the first match of the season, where the Falcon duo posted a 7-6, 6-1 win. However, in the state championship match, Andrzejczuk and Keil-Long prevented Siddiqui and Chai of becoming the first-ever state doubles champion in school history, when they posted a 6-2, 7-5 win...[more]
05.07.11 - Doubles team overcomes
injuries to win championship
With one of
their players forced to retire in the quarterfinals of
the Southern California Regional singles tournament and
another held out altogether, it would only make sense
that the duo would overcome those obstacles to capture
the Southern California Doubles championship for the
first time in Cerritos College men's tennis history.
Sophomores
Derek Siddiqui (Los
Alamitos HS) and
Johnny Chai
(Cerritos HS/UC Riverside) defeated #1-ranked
Alex Sarkissian and Trevor Campbell of Glendale College
in the finals, 5-7, 6-4, 6-2 on Saturday at College of
the Desert. The pair, who were ranked #2 for the
Southern California Regional Tournament, will enter the
state championships next weekend at Fresno City College
as the #1-ranked team from Southern California.
Siddiqui, who was ranked #2 in singles play, easily won
his first two singles matches on Friday, and was leading
Ventura College's Sean Levesque, 3-2 in the first set of
their quarterfinal match. However, still feeling the
effects of a nagging injury that stemmed from the Ojai
Tournament the week before, Siddiqui was forced to
retire. At the Ojai Tournament, Siddiqui easily defeated
Levesque, 6-1, 6-1 in the quarterfinals, and will be
ranked #4 at the state tournament...[more] |
