For the first time this season, the
Cerritos College men's tennis team not
only lost a doubles match, but they lost
a match on the court, as Riverside
Community College posted a 6-3
non-conference win at Cerritos on
Thursday afternoon. The Falcons (11-3),
who had to forfeit their first two
matches of the season, had run off 11
straight wins before the loss to the
Tigers, who improved to 15-3 on the
season. Cerritos, winners of the last
three South Coast Conference
championships, will now host Orange
Coast College in another non-conference
match at 2:00 p.m. on April 12.
In addition to the
first match loss of the season, the
Falcons also saw two of their doubles
teams lose for the first time all year.
Sophomore twins
Jeffrey Vachirajongkol (Paramount
HS) and
Jackie Vachirajongkol (Paramount
HS) dropped an 8-6 decision to
Flavio Rueda and Rashad Khamis, who used
their powerful serves to break the twins
twice in the match. Additionally,
freshmen
Michael Stripling (Santa
Fe HS) and
JC Dauz (Gahr HS)
suffered their first loss of the season,
8-6, as their serve was broken late in
the match by Mitch Grajeda and Chris
Lim. The only doubles team to remain
undefeated on the season was sophomores
Chris Chutikorn (Cerritos
HS) and
James Lee (Cerritos HS),
who posted an 8-5 win, but opened the
match leading, 3-0.
In singles play,
Chutikorn, playing his first match of
the season in the #1 position, suffered
a 3-6, 2-6 loss to Rueda, while the two
Vachirajongkol brothers were the only
singles players to win. Jackie, playing
at #2, defeated Khamis (6-3, 6-1), while
Jeffrey posted a 6-3, 6-4 win over Clint
Walder. The other three singles players
lost, with Stripling having to retire
with the score, 6-7, 4-4 in the #5 match
against Sam Kimbrell, due to an injury.
