At no time during their South Coast Conference season did the Cerritos College men's tennis team find themselves in trouble during their nine matches. With their 7-0 win over Long Beach City College on Thursday, the Falcons closed out their fourth straight undefeated SCC campaign. This season's sweep of the conference was by an all-freshman team, so if the squad remains intact for next year, they should be the favorites to go on and win their fifth title in a row. The Falcons will now compete in the conference tournament at Long Beach City started April 15.
In six of the team's conference wins, they shut out their opponents and lost only five games all season. It was more of the same against the Vikings on Thursday, as Cerritos swept through all six singles matches and all three doubles competitions. The Falcons did receive a default win in the #6 singles and #3 doubles match, while Nik Bote (Mayfair HS) saw his opponent retire just as their #5 singles match was to begin due to illness.
At the top, Doug Edwards (Western HS) got the singles started with a 6-1, 6-0 win, with David Sim (Cerritos HS) moving up to #2 and earned a 6-4, 6-0 victory. Carlos Gomez (Kennedy HS) shut out his opponent, 6-0, 6-0, with Jason Wall (Lakewood HS) posting a 6-0, 6-1 win.
It all started with convincing doubles wins, with Gomez and Sim winning, 8-4 in the #1 position, while Edwards and Wall shut out their opponent, 8-0. Bote and Matt Jun (Cerritos HS) received a default victory.
