Cerritos College freshman tennis player Doug Edwards (Western HS) needed very little time to prove he was the top singles player in the South Coast Conference, as he defeated El Camino College's Tsuyoshi Nagaoko, 6-3, 6-4 in the finals of the SCC Championships, which were held at Long Beach City College on Friday. Edwards, the top-seeded player, ousted the #2-seeded Nagaoko in a little under an hour.
Not long after his singles title, Edwards teamed with freshman Jason Wall (Lakewood HS) and promptly defeated Nagaoko and Clark Coble, 6-4, 6-1 to win the doubles championship. Edwards and Wall, the top-seeded team in the tournament, improved to 17-2 on the season, while Edwards is now 19-2 in singles play.
Next up for the Falcons will be the Ojai Tournament, which will take place at the Oxnard Tennis Center next Thursday through Sunday.
The top eight finishers at the SCC Championships qualify for the Southern California Regionals.
