Cerritos College freshman men’s tennis player Doug Edwards (Western HS) won his first two singles matches at the Ojai Tournament on Thursday and has advanced to the Round of 16. His doubles partner, freshman Jason Wall (Lakewood HS) won his first match, but was eliminated in the next round. In doubles action, Edwards and Wall won their first match and are scheduled for the next round on Friday.
Edwards, who’s ranked #8 in the tournament, received a first round bye and then defeated Josh Diaz of Diablo Valley College, 6-3, 6-2. He then beat Palomar College’s Jason Sinkoff, 6-3, 6-0 and is now slated to face Troy Kellenberger of Fresno City College early Friday morning. As for Wall, he also received a first round by before eliminating Charle Hunt of Saddleback College, 6-3, 6-0. His next opponent was #2-ranked Hassan Abbas of Ventura College, who beat Wall, 6-0, 6-1.
In doubles play, the #4-seeded Edwards and Wall opened with a 6-0, 6-0 win over Jake Coronel and Brandon Steele of Fullerton College. They are now scheduled to face Diablo Valley College’s Josh Diaz and Shane Medina at 12:30 p.m. on Friday. The team’s other doubles team of Carlos Gomez (Kennedy HS) and David Sim (Cerritos HS) were beaten in their first match by #2-seeded Hank Bessinger and Nico Ernst of Fresno City, 1-6, 3-6.
