Looking to pull of an upset, the Cerritos College freshman tennis
doubles team of
Doug Edwards (
Western
HS) and
Jason Wall
(
Lakewood HS) were defeated by top-seeded Waylon Bennett and Olumide Sherman-Norman of
Grossmont College, 4-6, 6-3, 5-7 in the semi-finals of the Ojai Tournament
on Sunday. The doubles team that Edwards and Wall will face again on Tuesday in
the Southern California Team Playoffs, went on to win the doubles title.
The duo, which won the South Coast Conference doubles
championship, played Bennett and Sherman-Norman to the end and were looking
to hand the top-rated team in Southern California a rare loss. The setback by
Edwards and Wall was just their third on the year, as they dropped to 21-3 on
the year.
The team will now prepare of the team semi-finals, while they
will also compete in the Southern California Regionals over the weeks at
Riverside Community College. Those that qualified for the regionals include
Edwards, Wall,
Nik Bote (
Mayfair
HS) and
Carlos Gomez (
Kennedy
HS) in singles play, with Edwards and Wall, Gomez and
David Sim (Cerritos HS)
,
along with Bote and
Matt Jun (
Cerritos
HS) in doubles play.
