In their
toughest match of the
season, the Cerritos
College men’s tennis
held off a fast-charging
Mt. San Jacinto College
team and recorded a 5-4
non-conference win at
home on Thursday. The
win by the Falcons
improves their season
record to 6-0, as they
get ready to face one of
the toughest teams in
the state. Cerritos will
now host Ventura College
at 2:00 p.m. next
Tuesday in a
non-conference match.
Playing singles
first, the Falcons were
able to post two
come-from-behind wins to
come out on top in the
first four positions,
while Cerritos also won
another three-set match.
At #2, freshman
Jason Wall (Lakewood
HS) dropped a 6-1
decision to Mitchell
Grajeda in the first set
and needed to win the
next two in order to
earn another team point.
He responded with 6-3,
6-1 wins in the next two
sets, which seemed to
spark freshman teammate
Carlos Gomez (Kennedy
HS) playing two
courts over. Playing at
#4, Gomez dropped a
tough 7-5 first set to
Carlos Marquez, but rode
the momentum of his
teammate to come back
for 6-3, 6-3 wins in the
next two sets to win the
match.
As
for freshman
Nik Bote (Mayfair
HS), he was trying
to stave off a comeback
attempt by Mitchell
Grajeda at #3. After
winning the first set,
6-3, he stumbled in the
second set and lost,
0-6. Needing to win the
third set in order to
keep his team in control
of the match, he came
back for a 6-3 win,
joining freshman
Doug Edwards (Western
HS), who won, 6-4,
6-4 in the #1 position.
Leading 4-2 after
singles play, the
Falcons knew they needed
to win just one of the
three doubles matches to
secure the victory. That
win came when Edwards
and Wall registered an
8-1 win in the #1
position over Dan Nguyen
and Francisco Alvarado.
The other two doubles
team were defeated,
which marked the first
time the Falcons had
suffered a setback in
doubles play all season.
