Looking
to make a statement
after their first loss
of the season against
Ventura College on
Tuesday, the Cerritos
College men’s tennis
team posted a 9-0
shutout over win Orange
Coast College in a
non-conference match on
Thursday. The win
improved the team’s
record to 7-1, as they
prepare to defend their
three-year run as the
South Coast Conference
champions. The Falcons,
who haven’t lost a
conference match in
three years, will travel
to Mt. San Antonio
College for a 2:00 p.m.
contest on Tuesday.
Cerritos got off to
a good start in their
win over the Pirates, as
they swept all three
doubles matches to give
them a sizeable
advantage heading into
singles play. Although
all three matches were
close, the Falcons had
too much firepower, and
pulled away for the
wins. The team’s top
doubles tandem of
freshmen
Doug Edwards (Western
HS) and
Jason Wall (Lakewood
HS), posted an 8-4
win, as did freshmen
Carlos Gomez (Kennedy
HS) and
David Sim (Cerritos
HS) in the #3
doubles match. Freshmen
Nik Bote (Mayfair
HS) and
Matt Jun (Cerritos
HS) came away with
an 8-5 victory.
The
singles matches had some
very exciting
competition, with two of
them going to a 10-point
tie-breaker in the third
set after the Falcons
had secured the match.
Gomez (7-5, 3-6, 10-8)
and Sim (6-1, 2-6, 10-8)
outlasted their
opponents, while Bote
(6-2, 6-1) and freshman
Mike Fitzgerald
(Lakewood HS),
who won, 6-1, 6-2,
defeated their opponents
quickly. At the top of
the ladder, Edwards
(6-4, 6-0) and Wall
(6-2, 6-4) completed the
shutout with straight
set wins.
