The
Cerritos College men’s
tennis team opened
defense of their three
straight South Coast
Conference titles on
Tuesday with a
convincing 7-0 win over
Mt. San Antonio. The win
improved the Falcons
record to 8-1 overall
and 1-0 in the SCC,
while they have now won
25 consecutive
conference matches. The
team will now host El
Camino College at 2:00
p.m. on Thursday.
Falcon head coach
Alvin Kim, who
has been the coach since
the start of the
conference winning
streak, moved a few
players around in
singles play, with the
team still sweeping past
the Mounties. At the
top, freshman
Doug Edwards (Western
HS) shut out James
Higuera, 6-0, 6-0, while
the trio of freshmen
David Sim (Cerritos
HS),
Mike Fitzgerald
(Lakewood HS) and
Kschris Anda (California
HS) each only lost
one game in the three
through five positions.
Freshman
Carlos Gomez (Kennedy
HS) improved to 3-0
in the #2 position with
a 6-3, 6-4 win over
Akira Sawada, with
freshman
Matt Jun (Cerritos
HS) registering a
6-2, 6-2 win at #6.
In
doubles action, the
Falcons saw Edwards and
freshman
Jason Wall (Lakewood
HS) shut out their
opponents in the top
position, with June and
freshman
Nik Bote (Mayfair
HS) posting an 8-5
win. Gomez and Sim
closed out the sweep
with an 8-2 victory.
