When
facing the three-time
South Coast Conference
champion Cerritos
College men’s tennis
team, opponents within
the South Coast
Conference are going to
try and use every rule
to their advantage and
El Camino College was no
exception. The SCC rules
state that you are
allowed to move your
players up or down a
spot to try and position
yourself for better
matchups. The Warriors
did just that at the top
of their singles and
doubles and it resulted
in two singles
victories. However, it
wasn’t enough, as the
Falcons posted a 5-2 win
to improve their season
record to 9-1, while
they are now 2-0 in
conference action.
Cerritos will now travel
to Long Beach City
College next Tuesday for
a 2:00 p.m. match.
Order
remained at the top
doubles match, as
freshman
Doug Edwards (Western
HS) and
Jason Wall (Lakewood
HS) easily won, 8-0.
The same was said for
freshmen
Carlos Gomez (Kennedy
HS) and
David Sim (Cerritos
HS), who posted an
8-2 win in the #3
position. The excitement
came in the #2 spot, as
El Camino dropped their
#1 team down to face
freshmen
Nik Bote (Mayfair
HS) and
Matt Jun (Cerritos
HS). The Falcons
came away with a 9-8
(12-10) tiebreaker win
over Clark Coble and
Tsuyoshi Nagaoko,
although the team had
already secured the one
doubles team point.
In
singles play, Edwards
had no problem with
Coble at the top spot,
winning, 6-0, 6-3, while
Wall suffered one of the
team’s two defeats, as
he fell to Nagaoko, 6-1,
4-6 (3-10) in a super
tie-breaker. Nagaoko is
the Warriors #1 singles
player. Cerritos
clinched the match when
freshman
Mike Fitzgerald
(Lakewood HS)
closed out Chris
Bohlmann, 6-2, 6-2, with
freshman
Kschris Anda (California
HS) coming back to
win a third set
tie-breaker, 4-6, 6-2
(10-6). Gomez was the
team’s other winner, as
he scored an easy 6-0,
6-0 win in the #4
position.
