Over the
last three seasons, the
Cerritos College men’s
tennis team has won the
South Coast Conference
championship and did so
by going undefeated.
They opened up the 2008
season with a convincing
8-1 non-conference win
at Cypress College on
Tuesday afternoon,
despite playing without
two of their starters.
The Falcons (1-0) will
now travel to Glendale
College on Thursday for
another 2:00 p.m.
non-conference match.
With
an entirely new team
this year, the Falcons
still could have swept
the Chargers in their
first-ever meeting, if
not for an injury by #2
singles player Jason
Wall, who had to
retire despite leading ,
6-2, 0-3 at the time of
his injury. However,
after some treatment, he
was able to return for
his doubles match with
Doug Edwards and
they registered an 8-6
victory.
Edwards, who played
in the #1 position,
posted a 6-2, 6-1
victory, while Nik
Bote (6-0, 6-2),
Mike Fitzgerald
(6-0, 6-0), Matt Jun
(6-2, 6-0) and
Kschris Anda (6-2,
6-0) all came away with
sweeps. Along with the
pairing of Edwards and
Wall, the duo of Bote
and Jun (8-0), along
with Fitzgerald and
Anda (8-2) came away
with strong wins.
The
two missing starters,
David Sim and
Carlos Gomez, will
be available to play on
Thursday against
Glendale.
