03.04.08 - WIN STREAK REMAINS INTACT WITH WIN OVER LB CITY

The Cerritos College men’s tennis team ran their South Coast Conference winning streak to 27 matches in a row with a convincing 7-0 win over Long Beach City College on Tuesday afternoon. The Falcons, winners of the last three conference titles, lost only four games combined in five of their six singles matches, while the doubles teams continued to dominate their opponents. The Falcons will now host Mt. San Antonio College on Thursday at 2:00 p.m. to start the second round of conference play.

The match opened with doubles play and Cerritos introduced a new pairing. With freshman Matt Jun (Cerritos HS) out with an injury, freshman Nik Bote (Mayfair HS) teamed with freshman Kschris Anda (California HS) for the first time and responded with an 8-1 win over Max Vallejo and Reynold Tacsuan, which clinched the team point for the Falcons. Freshmen Carlos Gomez (Kennedy HS) and David Sim (Cerritos HS) posted an 8-3 win in the #3 position, while the top team of freshmen Doug Edwards (Western HS) and Jason Wall (Lakewood HS) fought back from a 5-2 deficit to win six straight games and post an 8-5 win over Joe DeGuzman and Nathan Bowers.

In singles action, Edwards had his hands full with DeGuzman and was leading, 6-3, 5-5 when DeGuzman had to retire due to an injury. Aside from Edwards, the Falcons surrendered only four games in singles play, with freshman Matt Fitzgerald (Lakewood HS) and Anda posting 6-0, 6-0 wins in the #5 and #6 positions, respectively. Wall and Gomez each won their matches, 6-0, 6-1, with Sim winning, 6-2, 6-0 in his first match in the #2 spot.
