It’s
getting to the point
where the Cerritos
College men’s tennis
team is looking for new
ways to motivate
themselves. Going into
the start of the second
round of South Coast
Conference play, the
Falcons switched their
top two singles players
to increase their
singles seeding and they
still went out and
posted a 7-0 win at home
against Mt. San Antonio
College on Thursday
afternoon. With the win,
Cerritos is now 11-1
overall and 4-0 in
conference action. They
will look to win their
29th straight
conference match next
Tuesday when they host
El Camino College.
Even
as an all-freshmen team,
the Falcons have shown
the ability to shut down
their opponents,
regardless of who is
competing in what
position. Getting his
first action at the #1
spot to improve his
overall ranking,
Nik Bote (Mayfair
HS) posted a 6-2,
6-1 win over James
Higuera, while the
team’s regular #1
player,
Doug Edwards (Western
HS) had no trouble
shutting out Akira
Sawada, 6-0, 6-0.
David Sim (Cerritos
HS) also posted a
shutout, while
Mike Fitzgerald
(Lakewood HS) and
Kschris Anda (California
HS) lost just one
game apiece in the #5
and #6 spots,
respectively. In the #3
spot,
Carlos Gomez (Kennedy
HS) came away with a
6-2, 6-2 victory.
Doubles action was
more of the same, as
Bote and Anda teamed up
for the second time this
season and won, 8-0 in
the #2 position, while
Edwards and Wall
defeated Higuera and
Eric Kao, 6-2. In the #3
match, Gomez and Sim
registered an 8-1 win.
