When a team has
won 28 consecutive
South Coast
Conference matches,
there's bound to be
a little extra
intensity every time
you line up against
your next opponent.
For the Cerritos
College men's tennis
team, they secured
their 29th straight
match on Thursday
afternoon, as they
handed El Camino
College a 5-2
setback. The
Falcons, ranked #3
in Southern
California, improved
to 12-1 overall and
5-0 in conference,
as they prepare to
face Long Beach City
College next Tuesday
and then #2-ranked
Riverside College
March 25th. The
Falcons only loss of
the season came
against #1-ranked
Ventura College,
while the Warriors
are ranked #8 in
Southern California.
"This was a very
tough team (El
Camino) and they
came out gunning for
us," said Falcon
head coach
Alvin Kim.
"It was a good match
for us, because our
next match against
Riverside could move
us up to #2 with a
win, and possibly a
#3 state ranking."
The win over the
Warriors didn't come
without a setback.
Freshman
Jason Wall
(Lakewood HS),
who has spent the
majority of the
season as the team's
#2 singles player,
was injured during
doubles action and
had to be
substituted out of
singles play. His
status for the
all-important match
against Riverside is
questionable. Set to
play at #3 singles,
Wall saw his
teammates move up a
spot in the lineup
and respond by
winning three of the
five singles
matches, with
freshman
Doug Edwards
(Western HS)
taking care of
business at #1 by
posting a 6-4, 6-4
win over Tsuyoshi
Nagaoko.
Freshman
Nik
Bote
(Mayfair HS),
who moved up to the
#2 position, avenged
a first-round loss
to Keith
Boggero by
posting a 6-4, 6-0
win, while freshman
Carlos Gomez
(Kennedy HS)
came away with a
6-2, 6-2 victory at
#4. As for freshman
David
Sim
(Cerritos HS),
he posted a 6-0, 6-4
win, but the team
suffered a loss with
freshman
Mike Fitzgerald
(Lakewood HS),
who had to default
out of his #6
singles match due to
the three-strike
unsportsmanlike
conduct rule and
must now sit out of
match play for a
week.
Edwards and Wall
recorded a 9-7 win
in the #1 doubles
match, despite the
injury, while
Bote and
freshman
Matt Jun
(Cerritos HS)
won, 8-4. The
Falcons completed
the doubles sweep
after Gomez and
Sim won their
match by an 8-0
count.
