Ever since Cerritos
College men’s tennis
coach
Alvin Kim
was hired, he has
led his teams to
South Coast
Conference win after
win. With their 6-1
win over Long Beach
City College on
Tuesday, Kim coached
the Falcons to their
30th
straight SCC win and
are in line to win
their fourth
straight conference
championship under
Kim. The Falcons,
ranked #3 in
Southern California,
are now 13-1 overall
and 6-0 in
conference action.
The victory sets
the team up for one
of their most
important matches of
the season, as they
travel to Riverside
College next Tuesday
for a 2:00 p.m.
match against the
#2-ranked Tigers. A
win by the Falcons
will catapult them
into the #2 spot in
Southern California.
In the win over
the Vikings, there
were several
adjustments to the
ladder, as a result
of challenge play
results from during
the week. After
defeating
Jason Wall (Lakewood
HS) during
challenge week,
Carlos Gomez
(Kennedy HS)
received his first
action of the season
in the #1 position
and lost a very
close decision to
Joe DeGuzman, 6-7
(5), 5-7 and 8-10 in
a 10-point
tie-breaker after
the team score had
been decided. The
team’s regular #1
singles play,
Doug Edwards
(Western HS),
who’s ranked #4 in
Southern California,
had an easy 6-0, 6-0
win in the #2 spot.
In fact, Wall also
won, 6-0, 6-0 at #4,
while
Nik Bote (Mayfair
HS) and
David Sim (Cerritos
HS) each only
lost one game.
Kschris Anda
(California HS)
improved to 7-0 on
the season with a
win after his
opponent retired due
to an injury.
In doubles play,
Bote and
Matt Jun
(Cerritos HS) moved
up to the #1 spot
and posted a 9-7
win, while #4-ranked
Edwards and Wall
played at #2 and
won, 8-2, with Gomez
and Sim winning,
8-1.
