On the strength of
their 5-4
non-conference win
at Riverside College
on Tuesday, the
Cerritos College
men’s tennis team
catapulted
themselves over the
Tigers into the #2
ranking in Southern
California. Coming
into the match, the
Falcons were ranked
#3, with the winner
securing the #2
position. Cerritos,
14-1 overall, lost
their only match of
the season to
#1-ranked Ventura
College. The team
will now start the
final round of South
Coast Conference
action when they
play a 2:00 p.m.
match at Mt. San
Antonio College on
Thursday.
The match
against the Tigers
started with singles
and the Falcons
earned a quick win,
as the Tigers
defaulted the #6
match at the start.
In the three other
singles matches
Cerritos won, they
all were tight, with
the Falcons winning
a tie-breaker in
each. The top two
singles players were
defeated, as
Southern
California’s
#6-ranked Daniel
Coehlo moved up to
the #1 spot for the
Tigers and defeated
#5
Doug Edwards
(Western HS),
6-4, 6-4. The
top-rated player in
Southern California,
Yiar Banuelos moved
down one spot and
beat
Carlos Gomez
(Kennedy HS),
6-1, 6-2.
But in the
winning matches,
Nik Bote (Mayfair
HS) posted a
6-3, 0-6, 7-6 (5)
win at #3, with
Jason Wall (Lakewood
HS) moving down
to #4 and winning,
7-6 (6), 6-4, while
David Sim (Cerritos
HS) posted a
6-4, 7-6 (9) win to
give the Falcons a
4-2 lead heading
into doubles play.
Needing to win
all three doubles
matches to pull out
the victory,
Riverside did see
Banuelos and Coehlo
(ranked #2) beat
#4-ranked Edwards
and Wall, 8-3. But
the Falcons clinched
the match when #3
doubles team of
Gomez and Sim posted
an 8-3 win over
Camilo Almeida and
Tariq Khan.
